Met Billy Walker when I was a boy scout in Forest Gate, East London. He came to our hall to see us. There was a definite aura around him.

Incredible that Henry was basically a one handed fighter, leading with his strong left hand and doing little with his right.

An interesting observation. Henry Cooper was actually left-handed. There are vids of him signing autograghs for fans with his left hand. I believe it was a "sign of the times". I began amateur boxing at the age of 10 in 1943 (I'll be 80 years old tomorrow, 24.10.23). Being left-handed, along with my twin sister, I was obliged (that means forced) to write with my right hand in school. At the same time, I was also similarly obliged (if you can call it that) to box ""orthodox" in the ring instead of "southpaw" and true to my natural talent. It all seems to stem back to the Latin "sinistra" (meaning left and denoting "sinister"), and the "negativity" it entailed. But that's the way things were back then On a happier note, it also seems to be the reason why very many of my opponents in the ring suddenly succumbed to, and were surprised by my, allegedly, lethal hook. Ring magazine always said that Walker was a ticket seller but a crude walk in head butting guy with fan appeal and little talent.They were so right.Cooper should have fought Chuvalo but everyone knew how that would have ended.

Very skilful boxing from both boxers. Billy Walker was a tough, strong contender with the heart of a lion. Cooper was a skilful technician with a wicked left jab and an even better left hook launched off a two,one step. His spoiling and clinching were good too though I think he let Walker too close (difficult not to). shame that a cut ended such a good fight - both would have given their all ;)

With the greatest respect to Sir Henry Cooper, I think Jerry Quarry would have knocked him out. Quarry had slick boxing skills as well as a big punch. Henry didn't have the strongest of chins, being out for the count to Joe Bygraves, Ingemar Johansson, Zora Folley and Floyd Patterson.

Cruiserweights by todays standards neither would have a chance against Bruno or Lewis they are just to big.
@choppy249

whitenightf3 . I disagree totally . Cooper knocked down Ali the greatest fighter of all time who was a pretty big guy . Plus Ali was much better and tougher than Bruno and even Lewis . Cooper could possibly have even beaten Clay as he was then , if there hadn’t of been a two or three minute dodgy delay before the fight resumed . Ali later admitted he didn’t know where he was for a few minutes after that punch so if Cooper had a chance against Ali he certainly would have had an even better chance against lesser fighters . I would agree with you about Walker and a lot of the other British heavyweights around at the time . Only Cooper and Bugner , slightly later were good enough from those times to really compete at the top level .

@@choppy249 Ali was 15 stone and Cooper 14. Do you seriously believe Cooper at that weight would be a threat to Lewis at 17 stone? I don't I think he is too small.
@xchindit

@@whitenightf3 Makes no sense to compare size. Take Lewis back to the 1960s and he wouldn't weigh close to 17 stone. The training was different back then and there weren't any PEDs. He'd be a tall skinny guy with a weak chin. Bring Cooper from the 1960s to the 2000s and he'd weigh 16 stone easy. No 15 round fights and no need to cut the weight. Also that's the weight that Cooper walked around at after he retired in 1971 and he carried the weight well.

@@xchindit Absolutely, boxing and training methods change. We can't really compare fighters that are decades apart, even if it is a lot fun to do so.
