Hello everyone at the Running Channel, I have tried a variety of different nutrition options and have liked cliff bars and chews, gels from Sis and high five. A variety of different flavours is always key, otherwise a whole race with the same flavour can be not good for the stomach!

Hi Rosie, to be honest I really would use gels. Although you will have adrenalin to get you started I usually have one while waiting to begin and then at six and twelve miles. This way you should have plenty of energy all the way through but it may be worth bringing a couple extra, just in case. I do bring a bottle of Lucozade Sport with me but that's mainly because i hadn't used the gels much and it's a security blanket! Good luck and see you on the start line. Kevin

I just did my first half marathon 2 weeks ago! During my long runs in training, I found myself flagging after 60-90mins and carrying some gels and gummy bears around helped me push my training distances. On my actual race day, I took 2 gels and 2 packets of gummy bears with me in my hydration pack and finished them all!

Depending on the type of running you do, you may not need it. If in your training at HM speed, do you feel yourself lagging? There are lots of fat adapted runners that can tap that fuel for runs.

Hey guys! It's always interesting to hear your opinions on things like this. There are so many options out there and, when you're standing in the aisle staring at the multitudes of types, colours and flavours, it can be quite daunting so you just end up going with what you know (which may not be the best thing for you at the time). You don't often think about practical things like portability and ease of access (guilty of this myself) and end up trumping for the biggest bang in terms of kJ or carbohydrates. So, thank you for putting in the time to do this for us TRC!

for those who say they're struggling with gels or other products whilst running, try putting sugar in your water bottle. Pinch of salt for electrolytes, and maybe a squeeze of your favourite citris fruit for flavour. Although, I prefer just a dribble of squash for the flavour.

At the moment, especially through the warmer months I concentrate more on hydration, using high5 tablets, but I do make sure I fuel up before a run and have emergency gummies with me. Have not got on well with gels as they seem to thick and sickly. Will have to look more into this area as I'm a back of the pack runner doing the GNR for the first time, followed in a fortnight's time with a trail half in Northumbria!

Hi Guys, great video, thanks! I have been using Clif Bloks as they are energy dense and easy to chew/carry but you also need to take them with water. I have recently switched to SIS isotonic gels as that is what will be out on the course for my ‘A’ race this year - the Manchester Marathon on 10th October. They're really palatable and come in a good range of flavours - shop around and buy in bulk and you can find them for around 82p each. On longer/trail runs I take a Ziploc bag with a 50:50 mix of Skittles and KP Salt & Vinegar Peanuts - I know it sounds like a weird combination but it really works and has salt, fat, sweet, sour and crunch for jaded palates that are sick of gels etc. Plus, it doesn’t melt or get squished in your running vest like chocolate or some other sources of energy.

Another useful video! I'm training for my 3rd 50k, and finally realized nutrition is key to keeping me out of the "pain cave". I thankfully have a strong stomach, but I get sick of things quickly, need a variety, and need to mix gels with chewy things, or I feel like I'm STARVING! Unfortunately, I've also got a tight budget, so buying many things to try is difficult. This was useful in sorting through many options!

Nutrition is such a rabbit hole - my stomach seems to get along with pretty much everything too, so I'm always trying new things. I actually use Power Bar gels quite a bit, just because I can get them in every supermarket, they're not that bad at all. My favourites are the caffeinated Maurten gels, they totally hit the spot every time (and the minimal taste is actually sometimes a bonus compared to the sticky sweetness of some other gels). Close second → SiS, I actually enjoy the consistency of them, they go down fast & easy, „Cola“ is my favourite because it tastes more like some organic craft cola than regular cola, also has the right amount of caffeine for me. Clif bars are my favourite pre long run food, a „Blueberry Crisp” two hours before a long run is just perfect for me. Clif shots work well for me too, but they are very dense and gooey, takes ages for me to empty them. Recently tried „Chimpanzee“ gels and they are really good, very natural flavors & ingredients, same nice form factor as the clif shots, easy to swallow without being too liquidy. Cheers from Berlin / Germany!
