Hello everyone at the Running Channel, I have tried a variety of different nutrition options and have liked cliff bars and chews, gels from Sis and high five. A variety of different flavours is always key, otherwise a whole race with the same flavour can be not good for the stomach!

Since an unfortunate incident trying a soreen bar on a long run, I’ve always stuck with what I know when it comes to energy on a run. From SiS gels, Jelly Babies and numerous mini bags of haribo, it’s like a mini picnic on my long runs 😂 Recently though I’ve discovered Sports Beans. They jelly beans for runners and they’re awesome. Really gave me a boost in energy. Keep up the good work guys 👍🏻🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️

At the moment, especially through the warmer months I concentrate more on hydration, using high5 tablets, but I do make sure I fuel up before a run and have emergency gummies with me. Have not got on well with gels as they seem to thick and sickly. Will have to look more into this area as I'm a back of the pack runner doing the GNR for the first time, followed in a fortnight's time with a trail half in Northumbria!

Hi Rosie, to be honest I really would use gels. Although you will have adrenalin to get you started I usually have one while waiting to begin and then at six and twelve miles. This way you should have plenty of energy all the way through but it may be worth bringing a couple extra, just in case. I do bring a bottle of Lucozade Sport with me but that's mainly because i hadn't used the gels much and it's a security blanket! Good luck and see you on the start line. Kevin

I just did my first half marathon 2 weeks ago! During my long runs in training, I found myself flagging after 60-90mins and carrying some gels and gummy bears around helped me push my training distances. On my actual race day, I took 2 gels and 2 packets of gummy bears with me in my hydration pack and finished them all!

Depending on the type of running you do, you may not need it. If in your training at HM speed, do you feel yourself lagging? There are lots of fat adapted runners that can tap that fuel for runs.

Hey guys! It's always interesting to hear your opinions on things like this. There are so many options out there and, when you're standing in the aisle staring at the multitudes of types, colours and flavours, it can be quite daunting so you just end up going with what you know (which may not be the best thing for you at the time). You don't often think about practical things like portability and ease of access (guilty of this myself) and end up trumping for the biggest bang in terms of kJ or carbohydrates. So, thank you for putting in the time to do this for us TRC!

Hi Guys, great video, thanks! I have been using Clif Bloks as they are energy dense and easy to chew/carry but you also need to take them with water. I have recently switched to SIS isotonic gels as that is what will be out on the course for my ‘A’ race this year - the Manchester Marathon on 10th October. They're really palatable and come in a good range of flavours - shop around and buy in bulk and you can find them for around 82p each. On longer/trail runs I take a Ziploc bag with a 50:50 mix of Skittles and KP Salt & Vinegar Peanuts - I know it sounds like a weird combination but it really works and has salt, fat, sweet, sour and crunch for jaded palates that are sick of gels etc. Plus, it doesn’t melt or get squished in your running vest like chocolate or some other sources of energy.

My first marathon I trained and ran just using SIS gels (and fluid of course) by mile 18 of the marathon I was sick of them and couldn’t look at another once since! I’m a slower runner so run for longer and need more fuel as a result. Now the only gel I have found so far that I like is GU campfire s’mores they are yummy! But I also like to mix it up as I get sick of just having one thing so I use the High5 gummies, Clif Bloks and other normal sweets for variety. I need to have more though as I know I don’t get enough and flag near the end of my runs, will be doing my first ultra next year so hoping to find more options I like :)

In training I do a mix of gels and chews but on race day stick to gels on the course as they are the most portable option , not a fan at times of the sticky fingers but it is the best option. One race I did had a maple syrup based gel and it was easy to open and delicious but it is more expensive so I tend to buy it less frequently.
