My mother is 82 years old and still quilts. She doesn't use a rotary cutter, cuts her patterns out with scissors and then hand sews everything, from start to finish. Her eyesight is not very good anymore, but she still makes beautiful quilts. I am so blessed to have been able to learn the love of quilting from her.

I started seriously quilting a year ago after a couple attempts several years ago. I have made 10 full size quilts this year but what really got me over the fear was making 20" x 20" table toppers for each month of the year. These smaller projects made the task much more manageable and less expensive. It was a great way to practice piecing, applique, quilting and binding.

Oh, Lordy 😆. My first attempt was a disaster. I bought some lovely fabric and was sewing squares. I adjusted the needle position on my machine to make it easier to sew a narrow seam allowance. Unfortunately I switched the machine off for a break and when I came back I didn’t realise the needle had shifted back to the original position. My finished top actually had pleats in it where nothing lined up 😳.It was too much to undo. I put it away until I forgot how much I’d spent and then tried again. That was about ten years ago. I’m still learning and growing in this wonderful hobby and I’m proud of how they turn out now.

I worked at Sew Yeah before I knew anything about quilting. I fell in love with fabric and my first quilt was made with charm packs- I just sewed all the squares together in rows so I didn't have to cut any fabric. I finished it myself with a minky back, self bound, on my regular machine. It was wonky 😂 I've improved so much with every quilt I make. I try to learn a new skill every time I make a quilt.

I am an old hippie and started by just sewing squares together and making them into skirts. Back in the late 1970s early 1980s there was a lady on public television named Georgia bonesteel not sure about spelling her last name. Her weekly show and a book she authored took you through piecing 12 inch quilt blocks easy to hard. The book is “ lap quilting with Georgia bonesteel” I still refer to that book. By the time you are done you have a quilt

My friend owns a quilting store. She signed me up for a class. Then a mutual friend had a baby. We picked a quilt and I made the top. My friend has several women who come to her quilt store to sew together. She calls them the Day Care Ladies. One of them is the one who helped me make that baby quilt top. Lo, an absolutely fabulous woman. I need to get back with them.

Great video, Brody! The first quilt I made was an around the world pattern using squares. I had never even thought about making a quilt until I was in a general store in a small town and saw a display of fabric and thought it looked nice in the combination they had. It doesn't get much easier than sewing squares together. My advice to new quilters is to start with simple blocks and easy patterns and move on from there. Mastering half squares Triangles and you'll be amazed how many patterns you can create. ❤❤❤

I made my first quilt back in the late 90’s. My first one was filled with errors, seams not lining up but it got me hooked. For my first quilt I used a fabric panel and fudged borders around it and straight lined quilted it. In that quilt I had a 4 patch (my first block) though I had no idea it was called a 4 patch. One piece of advice I’d give is practice your 1/4 seam. You need to keep your seams a steady 1/4 inch.

My first quilt was just squares that I had family sign and then I hand embroidered for my parents 35th wedding anniversary. That was a tied quilt. When I really got into quilting my 5 year old grandson requested a log cabin quilt which I did with fabric he chose himself. That was 20 years ago (no quilting between my parents quilt and my grandsons) but I've been quilting ever since making that log cabin quilt.

I took a class somewhere else and it was just strips sewn together for a table runner. It was a terrible class and the instructor didn’t finish the class. But… I took your 4 week beginner class. We did a small quilt using 1/2 square triangles along with other blocks, which I completed. It was “self-binding”. Then I took a class for the fox and geese pattern. It’s got tradition binding and I consider it my first “real” quilt. I put a hanging sleeve on it and see it everyday.

My first quilt was a sampler. I started to hand quilt the top and made it through a couple of blocks before it was sidelined. Years later I removed the hand quilting and had it professionally quilted. Today I continue to prefer the piecing process and take advantage of the local professional longarm quilter.

My first quilt was made of friendship stars and chain blocks where the center was larger than the perimeter pieces. Those were then alternated in 5 rows of 5 blocks. The first thing I sewed for the quilt was the half square triangles to make the stars. I made the entire quilt and quilted it on my domestic sewing machine. It is going on my mom's bed this winter. It was a quilt kit, so the fabrics were pre-chosen for me, but I swapped out the batting from polyester to cotton because I don't like how the polyester feels.

My first quilt was a 6-block sampler; have no idea which block I made first! For first time quilters, start with something simple and practice that 1/4" seam. If you don't think anyone will like what you made for them, you will be wrong! Or... you can always make Pet Quilts for your local pet shelter. Puppies and kitties don't care if your seams don't match.

The video should aim for greater accuracy, particularly for novices. At the 0:08 mark, a quilt resembling Jacqueline de Jonge's Be Colorful quilt is displayed. While the demonstrated quilt is lovely, it needs more complexity than Ms. de Jonge's designs, which demand a pattern, paper piecing skills, and an understanding of sewing and quilting shapes. It is an intricate design, not merely a combination of 2.5" squares and half-square triangle rows.
