Heritage Auctions sold the legendary Walton Nickel Specimen of the 1913 Liberty Nickel for $3,172,500 at the Central States Numismatic Society Convention in Schaumburg, Illinois, outside Chicago. The nickel is one of only five known and is graded Proof 63 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). This example belonged to the coin collector George O. Walton who died tragically in a car crash in 1962 in route to a coin show. After his death his 1913 nickel was declared an altered date and languished in a closet in the home of his heirs until being rediscovered in 2003. The sale of this historic coin generated worldwide attention whose story was carried in more than 1000 media outlets. Coin dealer and numismatic author Jeff Garrett, president of Mid-American Coin Galleries, purchased the coin and stated owning a 1913 nickel had always been one of his dreams.
