Today the ICE International takes you from Aachen to Brussels (Bruxelles-Midi / Brussel-Zuid). We did not change only the national border between Germany and Belgium, but also a system border between different electricity systems. Already at the system change station in Aachen, there is a switch from the usual 15kV, 16.7Hz to the Belgian direct current system with a voltage of 3kV.
The vehicle used is the ICE 3M better known as BR 406, which is perfect for this route with its multi-system capability. As ICE 16, the train now runs from Frankfurt am Main, via the airport to Cologne on the high-speed route. From there we continue to Aachen on the German side. The train then leaves the Federal Republic of Germany over the steep section known as the “Ronheider Rampe” and then crosses the state border at Hergenrath. We then continue to Liege-Guillemins, the main train station in Liège. After a short stop, the journey continues there to the capital of Europe, Brussels.
