Ian Hislop was homophobic. Disappointing.

Personally I think it’s unlikely he meant anything intentionally. Private Eye writer Adam Macqueen is gay and in ‘Private Eye - The First 50 Years’ he said “[Hislop] has deliberately and successfully excised any form of homophobia from Private Eye”. Ben Summerskill was also a writer at the Eye before becoming chief executive of gay rights charity Stonewall where he said Hislop’s “relaxedness about the gay thing” was “hugely refreshing”. Also, when Hislop was originally nominated as editor there were worries he would be too supportive of “minorities such as feminists and homosexuals” (quote from Dick West in the book ‘Inside Private Eye’) which suggests his colleagues were homophobic but he himself isn’t. If he truly is homophobic and was simply eradicating homophobia from Private Eye as a sales tactic or something, then I agree it would be truly disappointing - as a bisexual myself it would be an awful shame if someone I admire so much is homophobic, and it would also undermine what he’s done to improve his own magazine and keep the moral high ground. (Sorry to give such a long reply, and I understand if you consider what he said to be homophobic anyway)

@@Person-rl8dg The standards were low back then. He's not overtly homophobic, and may have made pro-gay remarks, but he probably has unconscious homophobia. He has also made problematic remarks wrt race.

I don't think he's seriously homophobic, he's too intelligent to be prejudiced. Remember also that this is a comedy show, y'know , it involves "satire". Anyway, so long as it's not hatefull, we should be able to make jokes about people, whatever kinda person they might be, as we can eaqually take the piss out of ourselves. Everyone should lighten up, we're all becoming too easily offended about all sorts of stupid things, in the end no-one will be able to make a humouristc, observational comment for fear of being f'kin "cancelled"! Just get a grip on yerself. 😎😉
