Smoking while handling black powder..! When the Sharps breech block shears off the back of those paper cartridges there are plenty of powder flakes on the ground to ignite. Good luck with that.

+Bo Zo The ember is far enough away from the cartridge that it would never ignite. a smoke a tobacco pipe shooting muzzle loaders and black powder guns all the time. Also. black powder only explodes under compression. if a cartridge did decide to go up. it would just be a very fast firework fountain......... depending on the humidity of that day....... BP dampers very fast in open air..........

blackpowder leaves no more gunk in the sharps vs a muzzleloader its a simple slean with water and a patch or 2 for the sharps getting to the point where you need to clean is about 20 rounds and all you need to do is drop the breech down take the rod and run a damp patch down the bore then when you go to give it a full cleaning take a breech plock off a wipe down with a damp patch clean the barrel and you done

To make a correction the Burnside fires a .54 caliber cartridge, not a .52. By the way, where did this guy get his ammo? I'm guessing that he must have made it himself. Otherwise, it's impossible to find.

you do know they used the springfield trapdoor and not the high wall the burnside and the sharps where both used in the civil war both breech loaders both using paper cartridge rounds they also used in less numbers the henry in .44 henry rimfire and spencer in .56-.56 rimfire

@Thx1138d There was a great deal of resistance to the Sharps from the Quartermaster Corps, who believed that a weapon with that rate of fire encouraged the troops to waste ammunition. No, I am not making this up (g).

I get the first one- in that it used paper "cartridges"- so you need a cap, but I dont understand the 2nd two Carbines.. if they were brass cartridges- didnt they have a built in primer ? Sorry if this seems like a ignorant question, I just assumed that they would be like modern brass cartridges...

a smooth bore can be vary accurate out to 100 yards remember these guns where made for volley fire same with the rifled muskets heck even into the cartridge era thay still where made for volley fire (snider and martini henry is made for volley fire so where the first lee enfields)

I like the loading idea of the first rifle you put the paper cartridge in and when you closed the breech it cuts the end off I love it

Forgive my ignorance, but what is it you are doing after you load another cartridge? you reach into a little pouch on your belt and place something infront of the hammer. I am relatively new to this type of fire arm so...

Did you ever find the barrel band on your Burnside ? You can see it fall off about the 2 minute mark.
