I was already tearing up when they were saying goodbye - The sad music didn't help either but from reading the books, I knew this was coming but to see it in action.... as soon as Pan started whimpering, I felt tears down my cheeks but when Lyra screamed out in pain, I completely started bawling. It reminded me of the feeling when I lost my first and only dog when we had to put her down. Pan looked so helpless as he wanted to be by Lyra so she wasn't in pain but couldn't do anything about it and Will couldn't help her either except hold her. In that particular case, the link between a human and it's demon is just painfully stretched out which causes immense pain, but also results in the person and it's demon being able to exist far more distanced from each other... The book series had some good messages like never blindly trust anytone and some interesting characters but there were some major plot holes in the 3rd book and Lyra going to the land of the dead didn't make alot of sense. At the end of the book it was obvious that letting the ghosts out of the land of the dead weakened Metatron and helped them win the war but they didn't know this when they went to the land of the dead. A reasonable intelligent person would have realized that Rodger's death was not Lyra's fault and while it would be nice to say goodbye to Roger this goodbye wasn't worth risking Lyra and Will's life. I still don't understand why Lyra and Will would be willing to take the risk.

Witches undergo through a similar process to stretch the bond between them and their daemons, so that they can be very far apart and still be okay. Though, It's probably done slower, in little steps, and both halves are consenting to this, so their bond remains as strong as before. Here Lyra's and Pantalaimon's bond isn't broken. It's just stretched and stretched, like witches. But unlike witches, they've done the stretching brutally, pretty fast, and neither were okay with It, so It felt traumatic, It felt like a betrayal, and It felt like a sacrifice. It's sad to think that, even though their bond wasn't severed, since they'd done It in such a horrendous way when they did find each other again they could never be the same as before. As If this trauma tampered their pure relationship, like they lost their innocence and trust in each others, while still loving each others. Lyra and Pantalaimon suffered an enormous loss to save the dead: their relationship. The purpose was worth It, but It still feels unfair, for how close and perfect they were before. One of the saddest moments I ever saw. I adore how much powerful this sacrifice looks and feels. And while I understand and emphatize with Lyra's motives, and consider her noble for going through this, I'm able to forgive her for what she did to Pan. But my boyfriend, for instance, still doesn't feel able to forgive her for what she choose to do. He understands that It was important and that only her could do It, but still feels that It was cruel how she did It. I wonder If Pan felt the same way.

This is the sequence that made me hate Lyra. What selfishness, what immaturity, what superficiality, it's just the whim of a traumatized child. She's ready to give up her youth, and a being she can only see when she's alive, just to beg forgiveness from a dead man, instead of accepting reality like everyone else. When, in any case, she would have had the chance to see Roger again on the day of her own death. But no, an exception has to be made for her, and as she's special, obviously there won't be any real credible consequences in the end, I'm sure. It's a choice that will forever taint her bond with Pan, her own soul. It's sad, but I'd really have liked to see him disappear before Lyra's helpless eyes, at that precise moment, to make her understand the weight of her act. Because it's too easy. And Will, for his part, abandons his mother.

Will doesn’t have a daemon, he is from another world

@Allysa Alapad Actually he does, it's just invisible, and in the books it appears when he leaves for the land of the dead. That's why I asked the question but also why I put spoiler at the beginning. So people who haven't read the book would not be spoiled this part.
