Welcome to my new series that I will be doing! I found a fascinating book called "Costumes of Everyday Life" by Margaret Lister. It documents costume from Europe, France, Britain and America. I loved the concept of documenting workwear from the 900s to present day, since most costuming references are for finer dress (which I'd like to do a different series on).
In this book are many black and white drawings, which I wanted to create my own adaptations for each time period with color added. I also wanted to change the drawings a little, add backgrounds and make each garment a fashion plate that could be displayed. I feel that this could be an educational resource for all to enjoy.

For today's illustration: Countrygirl or maidservant. 1660. Taken from the book: Hair is parted in the center with curls at the side. Headdress: a plain white linen cap fits across the back of the head. Garments: A pale-yellow linen dress has a long stiffly boned bodice in the straight up-and-down fashion of the time. A fairly wide skirt touches the ground. A white apron is worn. A wide white linen collar covers the shoulders with front lacing. Plain loose sleeves end in turn-ups below the elbows. Footwear: Grey leather shoes have tongues with fastenings across them and fairly high heels. Accessories: A bowl to feed ducks.
Materials Used: I used Shin Han Designer Gouache, Artiza Premium 12 Round brush, Windsor Newton size 0 detail brush, and Princeton Select Oval Mop Brush 1''. I used Fabriano cold pressed brand watercolor paper and Mr. Pen painter's tape. I use Blackwing pearl pencils (Highly recommend!)
