USS Rochester is a special ship for myself as my Grandfather Melvin Shipley served aboard during the Korean War and I wanted to create this video in memory of him. This is my first time ever doing a video like this and I learned a lot along the way and I hope to improve and do more videos like this in the future. With this I want to write my own scripts for narrating future videos like this. USS Rochester is not going away as I have several more videos I will be doing that will feature several different stories on board the ship in the lives of the officers and enlisted with historical documentation passed down from my Grandfather. Best Regards, FLT

You're welcome and glad you enjoyed it! Oh yes I plan to, I enjoyed making the video immensely 🙌 Sweet! Fun how the ships can mean different things from person to person. Best Regards, FLT

Thank you for making this, my grandfather also served on the USS Rochester during Korean War, he was a Boilerman. I never got the chance to talk to him in depth about his service, but he always enjoyed talking about when the 8 inch shells were fired. He disembarked in Long Beach and settled down there immediately and started a family.

You are most welcome! That is nice, my grandfather did not like to talk too much about his time in serving on the USS Rochester. I think it mainly had to do with what he experienced when he would volunteer in going ashore to go in the combat zone in saving those injured to bring them back to the ship. They payout was a steak dinner upon returning to the ship if I recall correctly. He saw a lot offshore and being a part of the guard patrol when they docked, but I believe life on the ship was much calmer. Hmmmm, I am having to check now on this, but it is possible my grandfather also served as a Boilerman on the Rochester as well during the Korean War 🤔 I get confused sometimes because he also served on the USS Gearing I believe it was. Checking into this now 👍 Best Regards, FLT

@Test_Tickles I confirmed my grandfather was indeed a Boilerman as well so likely our Grandfather's worked together during the Korean War. His name was Melvin Shipley, do you mind sharing your Grandfather's name with me or you can email me as well if that is more comfortable for you. My father was curious 😄 Best Regards, FLT

I am going to be spending some more time with Rochester for a bit and then have a few other ships/operations in mind. I am more interested in the USN, RN & Kreigsmarine more so than the IJN. Bismark, Tirpitz & Scharnhorst definitely grab my attention, but I know so many videos have been done on them as the ships have such a large history, so not ruling them out. Some pacific operations I cover in the future are likely include some of the IJN so we will see, but can't guarantee anything 😉 Best Regards, FLT

My father GMGC Stroup was stationed on this ship in 1950. I have a great photo of the gun division under the gun turrets.

My dad served on the Rochester from 1956-1958. I still have his ships annuals to this day. Sam Swiney Gunners Mate 3rd class I think. I think he was on a 5” gun or later on the 3”.

@@TheHarrisontemple Same, my grandfather did not speak of it much. He was part of some of the volunteers which would go to shore and retrieve wounded men and bring them aboard the ship. He saved several lives which makes me proud 😄 I believe a steak dinner was the reward for volunteering because it was dangerous as I only know a handful of stories from this. Best Regards, FLT
