Adam Jones would be proud! #toolarmy Other recommendations for an AJ sound: Diezel VH4-2 pedal (!), Duncan SH4 in the bridge, REVV G3 pedal, Strymon Iridium on punch mode with a 4x12 G12M impulse response, On HX/Helix: German Ubersonic + Plexi in parallel OR Line6 2204 + Line6 Badonk parallel (the 1st takes up almost ALL DSP power on the stomp). Follow basementGAS, he went down the rabbit hole. I made an HX Stomp/Helix Patch for AJ sounds. AJ uses a fairly simple set of pedals: MXR Micro Amp, Boss BF2 Flanger, Boss DD3 Delay, DOD 7 band EQ (basically a Boss GE7), old Line6 DL4, Wah, Volume pedal for swells. #spiralout

Good job Guillaume, some nice recomendations and decent tones you got through that rig. If your looking for a digital solution for your DAW, the VH4 plugin from Plugin Alliance is a great option. I paid $75 which isnt cheap but personally after trying BIAS FX2 and Amplitube and a few others its certainly the closest I have gotten in the digital realm. There is a 30 day fully featured trial which is great to test it out, I bought it after 3 hours because I was sufficiently impressed with the tones I was getting. I got a discount code sent to me after I downloaded the trial which I got $75 off the $150 retail price. It has all 4 channels and once you play around with the EQ settings and the Deep and Presence knobs its really begins to get you close to the tone. I use American 4x12 cab option 63, which gets me that Mesa Boogie cab sound and with the built in delay and gate theres plenty to play with. The price is the only downside but definitely try the trial out and use it for 30 days and I think you will be impressed at how close it sounds. Of course AJ tone is elusive and a rabbit hole pursuit but there aint much else to do during the lockdown.

Great breakdown of sound for Lateralus! Pretty darn good tone by the way. Doesn't Jones use a Volume pedal for this song in lieu of the guitar volume knob? And does the Delay get turned off after the intro? Awesome that you did a tutorial for this song; just wish you had taught more of the song. More Tool! More Tool! And add some Chevelle!

I know what you said, but I found it was probably the VH-4 + in the video said Marshall Super Bass. That VH-4 you can get in pedalform from Diezel. If you've got a Marshall and want to try it, you could parallel mix that pedal to get a mix between your Marshall (even if it's not a Super Bass) and the VH-4 sound. Details. I now, but for those who like details. And what Guillaume said, if you want to try that, why not try adding a Bogner Überschall pedal in that parallel loop as well and if you've got room to spare... Why not try a Revv G4? The switches on that could hone you in on what you want as the fourth (virtual) amp in your setup. If you got a few of those, get yourself a parallel mixer, I'd recommend the EHX Parallel Mixer or Old Blood Noise Signal Blender.

Another option for a Marshall type tone with a parallel loop is the Laney GH50/100L, which is pretty close to a JCM800, and has a parallel fx loop. You can use a splitter to have one signal to go into the front and through the VH4 pedal through the fx return, and blend to taste.

I did learn something.... I learned that these videos only teach you the first 2 measures of the song being presented. I also learned that if it's a complex tone, we will only be given a rough idea of how to get barely in the same ballpark as the original. Man what a disappointment! I know I am being an as**ole (I know everyone reading this is thinking "typical Tool fan" lol). I'm sorry to be so critical. I was excited to see this video come up. After watching the first half, I thought to myself "what the f*ck is this" Lol! I do appreciate your time and effort though! It has to be one of the more complex tones in modern rock music! Not very many KZitem channels even attempt to recreate it. I'm being a hippocrite too! That's because I'm a massive Tool fan of 20+ years and I still don't get the tone perfect!
