A rare HIs Masters Voice portable Gramophone model 102 in Maroon/ Red leatherette finish Circa 1933 - 1936 FOR SALE on ebay.co.uk playing LAMBETH WALK by Billy Cotton
That's Billy Cotton and his band on the Rex label. I have a copy in my collection.

Beautiful. I found a record perhaps from that period, maybe made of shellac. It was very heavy and thick, and the grooves did appear much 'smoother' than on newer vinyls. The older records would be with people singing/playing directly into the large cone for recording - purely analog sound. From 20s to 40s they were using mics and electric amplification, but before the 20s it was all real voice without mics or electronics used.

Electric recording on records for commercial sale began in mid-1925. You are correct that your record indeed is shellac - certainly not vinyl - by your description. I tell newbies - all vinyl (the plural for vinyl is vinyl) are records, but not all records are vinyl!

A wonderful piece of social history.... I'd love to buy one, but am wary of buying off ebay, as I don't know an awful lot about them.... I'll keep looking though!

Chris Bingham , thanks I agree - they really do transport you to a different time/ era! most machines you buy either through eBay or anywhere will not have been properly serviced for 80 years and although work to a degree a we'll set up and serviced machine is a joy to use and own, I have a number of these and do servicing and occasionally sell like the one you commented on, although usually in black.... I could always let you know next time I am selling ;)

Hello. I thought I'd better mention it, but someone put me onto a chap in Cornwall, who offered me a very nice gramophone which I couldn't resist. But many thanks for your offer anyway. Cheers.

Nice to see it. What type of record play with this model ? 78 RPM shellac records ? or later version 78 rpm vinyl records? pls. let me know. Thanks.

Because of the heavy weight of the tonearm these are best used with 78rpm shellac type records or similar. It could be very damaging to later vinyl records... I have played some celluloid type flexible 78 discs on these and they are fine and some early 1950s records that are made of a 'type' of vinyl but stronger, I wouldn't risk anything made after that personally ;)

@@131mkr Thanks for your advise. I have Victrola 1917 year Gramophone. The seller recommend me to use heavier shellac record for my player. Mostly made before 1930.
