I never understood why Asgard, the Norse realm of the gods, was ethnically diverse, but Wakanda wasn't? The answer changes depending on which question is asked. If you ask why Asgard is diverse, you're told because it's fictional, they're aliens and so on, and that black people were vikings etc. (we wuz vikaaaangz somes to mind) If you ask why Wakanda is not diverse, you're told numerous reasons such as it being an obscure nation, it's African so can only be black and something about the movie being "empowering" because apparently that hasn't happened enough yet. I'm no economist, but surely self-contained nation wouldn't have thrived to the extent that it did without having established international trade and having something valuable (other than vibranium since it's Wakanda's worst kept secret).

The current age of Hollywood is a contradictory mess. There are people there who want to make movies more "diverse", but the studios are ridiculously risk-averse. The best way to to sensibly make more "diverse" movies is to have original stories where you can do anything you want and cast anyone you want. But Hollywood is terrified of taking chances on new things, especially when they can't control their own budgets anymore. That's why you constantly see existing IP twisted and pulled to fit into the modern "agenda." I've always considered the practice of race swapping actors to be pretty insulting to "people of color." It's basically telling them that, if they want to succeed, they should just copy what white people have already done. Don't be yourself, just take something other people already made and awkwardly fit it onto yourself. It's ridiculous because the "people of colour" who have actually made cultural impacts in the past all did their own thing and were their own people.

This is by far the best analysis of the problem that I've read. I think so much of the problem (and Chris Gore and others have brought this up) is that (for a variety of internal and external reasons) we've seen the collapse of mid budget films made for something between 50-100 million dollars in Hollywood. Those types of movies could be where you experimented with new stories, characters and ideas (and people forget that a number of film franchises arose from this range, and horror and slasher flicks have always flourished in this price range). Unfortunately Hollywood doesn't seem to have any discipline anymore when it comes to budgeting (and the market has also evaporated with the rise of streaming) and so that type of movie has almost completely collapsed. All it makes me think is that I miss Blockbuster.

I could almost--almost--accept "color-blind casting" if the term wasn't such an egregious bit of double-speak. "Color-blind casting" is anything but. When you see a young non-white, female character (and this is sometimes also the case for white female character, but it is definitely always so with a non-white one), you can be sure she will never be stupid, venal, petty, weak or cowardly, and if she does do something bad, it will be presented as understandable if not downright justified because of a past trauma or injustice she suffered. And that injustice will almost surely have come at the hands of a stupid, venal, petty, weak, cowardly, and probably also jealous man. Usually but not always a white man. Always a man though. It's become such a cliche at this point that it's funny, or at least funny that the trope continues to be used by writers like it hasn't become a complete joke, and it immediately marks out a show as a pile of horse shit you're not going to want to watch. If "diverse" actors were allowed to portray a full range of characters who might have all sorts of personal traits that cause them to behave in both noble and ignoble ways---in other words, if they were written to behave like actual humans instead of trite symbols or politically virtuous sandwich boards--then maybe it wouldn't be so painful to have the sociological and ethnic history of a particular setting make absolutely no goddamn sense. But when you know as soon as the characters appear on screen which ones the show will demand the audience like and admire, it's really quite insufferable.

Racism, prejudice and discrimination existed since the dawn of humanity. It still exists in many parts of the world. And it isn't just about skin color. There are plenty of ethnic groups, who may look the same to outsiders, who absolutely loathe each other. Just look at how the Irish, Italians, Polish, etc were treated by the English-Americans when they came over from Europe. I'm not saying every story about the past should be steeped in racism and discrimination. But it should be acknowledged that it existed. The Kevin Cosner Robin Hood movie was fairly liberal with Morgan Freeman's character, but there were characters who didn't like him because he was a Moor. And it was universally surprising for these 12th century English people to see a black man because (as it was in real life) England wasn't filled with black people. And I don't know why every modern fantasy series has to have every place be completely diverse. Giving each race their own country or geographic area makes things more interesting. Then you can have different aesthetics for different places your heroes go, you know like in good fantasy books. You certainly can have a particularly cosmopolitan city or country, maybe a big trading hub where many traders and merchants from all over mingle, but it should be presented as unique. Making everywhere the same is just bland and boring.

Not in the "get in the trenches and really dig into what it means to live in a society disabled" way. THAT is how you know areal activist from a Woke virtue-signalling one. The Identity Junkies do not really focus on disability because it is not seen as sexy, or something "better than another group of people" or "aspirational.". Nobody says, "Gee, I wish I was disabled bc they're the superior identity category.". Most disabled people who are moderately to severely limited by disability are removed from or excluded by the Woke crap because they're too busy trying to survive, not playing social games. The Woke who scream about oppression have an actual oppressed minority in the modern day they could fight for, but their crusades are vanity projects they have to go back centuries to find levels of discrimination to be outraged about.

Netflix's "The Dragon Prince" had a deaf woman in the role of a military commander. It was unfortunate that, as far as I saw, they wanted to believe that this would only be an advantage, and not, say, limit the character's situational awareness or ability to communicate with her subordinates.

@@sterling7 Sounds like "inspiration p0rn.". There are definitely ways a disability can give someone certain advantages, but there's almost always extra struggle and cost. If people don't see the reality of this way of living, there can't actually be change or they think it's some "magical gift" and we remain invisible. I don't want the visibility for disabled people out of the weird ego Woke stuff. It's more like healthier people aren't exposed to and don't know the dangers of what happens when you become disabled and lose resources, and it should be a warning as well as show people how society can help others and everyone can benefit.

As someone who is both liberal and also, according to identity politics, an overlap of all the "ticked boxes" except race, I am so fatigued of this in pop culture and equally afraid. Individuals who want elevation and fall into one of the "identity categories" will over-emphasize this element more as a reflection of their "individual me-ness of me" than the historicity or present-day struggles of that group. It's become more like high school, where people put on different clothes to fit into different groups for social clout. Our individual identities are not limited to these monolithic "group identities" the way everyone is trying to assign their entire personality to a Hogwart's House. I wish there were writers who just WROTE about ANYTHING. Even if they were in one of the identity groups, their own unique life experiences will shape how they write (in terms of subject matter, tone, themes, style). We would still be getting a unique experience of an individual shaped by many different biological and cultural forces, but the actual content they create would not be "limited to the lens of an identity group."

If the economy of Regency England was so propped up by the slave trade, as the historian you cite suggests, wouldn't the "diverse nobles" of Bridgerton also be beneficiaries of it and, accordingly, wouldn't their concern to deal with racism only as it impacts their social class make them even more prissy and hypocritical than the "less enlightened" white nobles they are huffing at? And if that is the case, doesn't that tell us a lot about the mindset and world view of people who write and perform in such things?

Because Hollywood is so greedy, most studios resort to some sort of preestablished IP with its own audience to co-opt into a movie or TV show. But they're also creatively bankrupt, so respecting canon while putting a fresh spin on it is also out of their wheelhouse. So the best they can do is take something beloved by fans already and corrupt it with modern-day sensibilities and politics. It's infuriating. And it's coming back to bite them in the ass.

I was recently thinking about the idea that these socio-political ideologies are actually a somewhat clever sort of "psy-op." By more or less inverting everything, it all becomes nothing. If men can be women, then gender means nothing. If the past can be the present, then history can be ignored. If a straight person can have same sex relations, then sexuality doesn't exist. And so on and so on. I think you get the point. There seems to be a concerted effort to erase the notion of differences, but it in some cases, it's being done in indirectly(passive-aggressively) which makes it harder for some to notice. An example of this is the teaching of self-victimization under the guise of viture and care: the reason you can't succeed is not because you haven't done what's necessary, it's because you're being held down by some outside force. In many cases this force they name ends up being an invisible hand and cannot even be quantified. This can be done to every person because everyone falls into some social category that lacks "privilege" compared to another person or group. This is slightly off topic, but it's an example of the unquantifiable: Climate Change. We understand that climate changes, and that we might even be having some impact on the rate at which it changes, but for all the rhetoric, I have yet to hear a single number given on just how much we're contributing or any legitimate argument made about what we could actually do that would make a difference if we are indeed contributing. I also notice that we're being told by those with vast wealth and/or political influence that we must act in a certain way, but yet those very people don't set an example by doing it themselves. It's almost as if they don't actually believe it, or if they do they don't seem to care enough to make the sacrifices they're attempting to force everyone else to make. I could go on, but I'd rather not.

I loathe soft revisionism, mostly because it insults and degrades the very real challenges and struggles of people in the past, bypassed with an intertextual slight of hand that it's all done with the most earnest of urban multi culti intentions. But mostly I loathe it because it's bad art. The clip of the Diverse Fantasy crowds is so instructive, and to paraphrase Groove Armada "if everybody looked the same [diverse and inclusive] we'd get tired of looking at each other". I am tired. Of that shit. The shows all failed, in large part because their world-building and character work was an interpretive crime against source material - and they all look the same: Willow was so bad Disney removed it from D+ to save residual revenue destruction. A truly imaginative Bridgerton would have set it in Meiji Japan, or the Ashanti kingdom, not with the timid and gratuitous race swaps that the show thought it was so damned edgy to attempt.

What I find most interesting about "identity junkies" is that they are the worse offenders in prejudice. I can attest to that in a heartbeat. I am of Asiatic Turkish and African descent, and while I am obvioulsy "African descent looking" I am pale skinned like my Turkish ancestors. I have "dark green" eyes (actually green and brown eyes when you see them close with macro camera, green on the outside, brown on the inside) but they look very light when illuminated. In my young years sometimes the kids who didnt knew me called me the "german" or the "gallego". Racism is intimately linked to diversity, and diversity would not exist if not for racism. Imagine a World in which most countries "removed racism" or "woke" up before. There would be no reason to enslave people in another continent, and to sell them. We are not racist but we dont get nice only because of that. The result would be, if race is not an issue, we would enslave someone close. In fact, WHEN race was not an issue, humans enslaved their own race, they are close. There would be no reason for Africans to SELL AFRICANS to European and Asian slavers. There would be no reason for other kinds of slavery (the very own term slavery that comes from Slavic people). So if slavery or racism was "vanquished" it would lead people to not BRING diverse racial people to their land, or to flee slavery by GOING TO diverse racial lands than their own. Dark skinned people would remain where they were, pale skinned people would remain where they were. A lot goes on that. I lived in Africa for a while, and I was born in southeast Brazil. I am used to cold climates that even in Brazil are rare. I used to live in a higher altitude part of São Paulo, which is already the "land of the drizzle rain" (terra da garoa). When I was in Africa, the few times when that specific place (northwest africa) had climate similar to my birthplace, the people there would be wearing overcoats, holding umbrelas, going out only when necessary. I would be in a shirt and shorts walking outside just to feel the refreshing feeling I would welcome from the scorching hell I found that place to be. Why would someone not forced by racism to choose to live in a place that felt that way ? Maybe because we need to earn MONEY we would not ? Why does anyone have a bad life and have to go somewhere else to work for money in unfavorable conditions ? ACCORDING TO THE IDENTITY JUNKIES: RACISM. So no racism, no reason to that, according to them. So at the end of the day, for their own minds, if there were no racism, there would be no "identity equality" and people of different races would have much less reason to mix up unless a "nice vacation on different climate", or a "cooperation project", which sure wouldnt end up creating a mixed race utopia. Racism creates that.

I remember reading an interview with a British actress saying she absolutely loves historical fiction of England but could never be cast in one because she's black, which made me absolutely supportive of colourblind casting in historical dramas, like they do in theatre. There's nothing wrong with that, it changes nothing, it implies nothing about the past, simply gives chances to those who would be unfairly excluded otherwise from something as meaningless as entertainment. The Cleopatra show was wrong because it claimed to be a documentary, but there's nothing wrong or strange in black Anne Boleyn.

Weird how a person like Shonda who slipped all the way down the identity politics rabbit hole is so excited of the idea of portraying the "first black royal" in a some European monarchy, yet has no interest in any actual black royals on the continent with our black ancestors. I always find it interesting these "diversity" pushing people only see worth in inserting "diversity" into white people's already diverse culture. Diverse in the sense a German and an Italian are not the same thing any more than a Chinese person is like Japanese person or an Ethiopian is a Nigerian. Why do they have no interest in exploring black diversity in African cultures, past and present? And when Africa is touched, we get a black Cleopatra. But Jada at least also did one with Njinga, but to Africans in that region it just came off as the same girl boss, revisionist history, Woman King-ish bs. To them, it'd be like hiring a white woman with a heavy Columbian accent to play Queen Elizabeth the first. And having the show written by people who can't tell a Indian and Armenian apart by look or culture. The shows quality in general was also crap.

I might note that in both pre-modern history and fantasy, ignoring the geographic element of race completely negates *why* it arose in the first place: to adapt to one's environment. The classic example would be skin color: why do we develop varying levels of skin pigmentation? To adapt to higher and lower levels of sunlight exposure, with greater levels of melanin allowing better protection from sunburn. Why do people of Northern European descent often have longer and thinner noses? To adapt to climates with longer and colder winters, where they could deal with taking in cold air better than broader noses. None of this is racist. Its just noting why differences emerge and appreciating how the adaptability that helped humanity thrived can be seen in every face...but its negated when we utterly ignore it in environments where modern travel and amenities don't exist. I'd argue this actually disrespects humanity as a whole, not just any particular race, because it takes away how human beings adapted and evolved, building their lives in response to and often in spite of the challenges to their particular environments, while in the fantasy genre, it takes away from the uniqueness and potential for a great story in each race, human or otherwise.
