After seeing this when we were kids my brother and I referred to every Indiana Jones movie as Chicago Jones Temple of Doom. To this day we still call Harrison Ford Chicago Jones, e.g., in Star Wars episode 7 Kylo Ren killed Chicago Jones.

This movie was made on a budget of less than $100K and it made $5.3 mil at the box office. The star/producer/writer/director, Robert Townsend financed the movie himself, much of it on credit cards. The film was a tongue in cheek jab at Hollywood studios that kept turning him down for roles he auditioned for because “he wasn’t Black enough”. Townsend made some real money on this film and then saw a good deal of success acting, writing, directing, producing, and especially stand up comedy after it. He was a walking middle finger to Hollywood.

I saw this movie when it first came out. This movie isn't "Bool-shit". And to this day I'm watching movies with my buddy and we look at each other and say "Bool-Shit". Roger Ebert praised Robert Townsend for this film as being a bright new-filmmaker. I agree from that critism. And me my Homie give dat shit two thumbs up with a hommie handshake handslap.

If you compare this to many today's comedies, there is some genuinely good writing acting here, not a bunch of post production stitching together excerpts from an hour of the actors "improvising".
