I saw Hot Fuzz when it came out, and thought nostalgically of Wells, the only small English town I've ever had a weekend to explore on my own. Then I looked up, and the movie was shot in Wells! A meaningless coincidence, but watching the movie brings back those lovely memories, such as the Cathedral grounds and the antique musical instrument shop and antique scientific instrument shop (!) right by the Penniless Porch. I remember most places being closed and the town quiet. Perhaps some bank holiday, or maybe it was Sunday (this was the third week of March 2003). I think if I ever make it back to England, although there's so much more I want to see, I'll just have to head to Somerset again. One thing about Wells is that it's on a pressurized karst aquifer, beneath the Mendip Hills to the north, and there's an artesian fountain (seen in the film) near the city square which keeps the gutters downhill from there continually washed in sparkling clear water.
