This song was written about the great singer Valerie Carter. She sang back up and recorded for a number of artists including James Taylor. I see James Taylor every time he performs in my general area (which is almost every year) Valerie was almost always there singing back up. Then one year, Valerie was not at the show. And I don't remember her ever being back again. It turns out that Valerie had a problem with addiction. There was a video of Valerie getting released from her obligation to the court for some sort of drug issue - or something like that. James Taylor came to the hearing and sang You've Got a Friend to Valerie in the courtroom. I'll never forget it. RIP beautiful Valerie

"Roll With It" is Winwood connecting to the music he loved when he was younger. To go from a 60s musician to a solo artist having hits in the 80s is pretty astounding in its difficulty. Other 80s artists could not have done "roll with it." Winwood could because that music is in his back pocket and he can easily execute it because he's not just a singer but a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.

Technically, you've done him twice before this... you did "Higher Love", but you also did "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, of which he was a member. He was also in The Spencer Davis Group, and Traffic. Some of Steve's other great solo hits include "Roll With It", "Back in the High LIfe Again", and "The Finer Things". My personal favorite of his (after "Valerie") is "Freedom Overspill". It's a very underrated song, but a true banger! Also - I think this is the 1982 original version of the song. A remix was done in 1987, and THAT version hit the Billboard Top 10. It had more drums, and several other instruments as well. It was richer, fuller, and I think you'd love that version more than this one.

Wow, too bad You didn’t hear what I heard the first time I heard this song. That crying out in passion for his Valerie is what made this song one of my favs. I didn’t know the backstory until recently when Valerie Carter passed away during the COVID lockdowns. Valerie was an amazing back up singer during the 70’ & 80’s & was highly sought after by the most popular & talented musicians of the day. You can see her & her beauty in James Taylor’s ‘Live at the Beacon Theater’ concert. She’s the cute blonde in the short black dress with the infectious smile. Her life was a little tortured & she had her struggles as many do in that business & people like James Taylor were there to help her out of it. Valerie had such an impact on singer songwriters that in the business she was called on a lot & 2 major artist’s wrote & sang a song about her. One of course was ‘Valerie’ by Steve Winwood who was taken by her beauty & talent but then like the wind she was gone out of his life as he cries out ‘call on me, Valerie, come and see….me. I’m the same boy I used to be.’ The other artist who wrote & sang about Valerie was Jackson Browne who wrote the hit ‘That Girl could Sing’ in 1980. Rest In Peace & may God richly gracefully love Valerie Carter.

"Arc of a Diver"....Hands down his best (song and album). I fell in love the summer it came out. Lord! Those memories! California..scented fog, pepper and eucalyptus...and a beautiful, beautiful boy that I adored. Every time I hear Steve Winwood sing I go back....

Always great to see honest reactions. For people my age, this is pure nostalgia. Something to remember, when songs like this came around, this type of thing was a brand new sound. Listening to it with current day ears, it won't have that same impact. There were certain sounds of the 70s that was everywhere, then the sound of the synth and keyboards was discovered, and it was like nothing that we had ever heard before. That sound alone sustained this type of music for a long time, then like anything it became overused and music moved on. By today's standards, it is simplistic, but it definitely had it's time and place. Love you guys, until next time.

Steve Winwood is a force of nature going back to 1964. A Songwriter Singer, KeyboardsPlayer Guitarist. He has played in The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. He has played with the likes of Eric Clapton (a lot) Howling Wolf, lots of other Top Artists because he is one himself!

There's no mistaking a Steve Winwood song when you hear it. He's one of a kind for sure. He was one of my favs back in the day.

Steve Winwood was also in the super group Blind Faith as keyboardist and vocalist, which also included Eric Clapton on guitar, Ginger Baker on drums and Rick Grech on bass. This was after Cream disbanded. Their first album, in my opinion was the best with songs like Had to Cry Today, Presence Of The Lord and Can’t Find MY Way Home. Steve Winwood is a great keyboardist and guitarist as well as a top shelf vocalist.

When Winwood was in the group, Traffic, they recorded one of the best albums of all time. It was "John Barleycorn Must Die". Rock, jazz, ballads, handclaps and bluesy saxophone. Y'all's names are all over it. Check it out!

You should check out some young teenage Stevie Winwood when he was in The Spencer Davis Group. "Keep on running", "Somebody help me" and "Gimme some loving's" are their top tunes.

Winwood is one of the all-time greats. Need to go back earlier than 80s and listen to his work with Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, and Traffic. Gimme Some Lovin' with a young Winwood is a banger.
