The woman backing up Steve is Chaka Khan. Take the dive into her early work from the 1970's like "Tell Me Something Good" (with Rufus) and "I'm Every Woman" Yeah, she did it before Whitney; it was her first solo hit without Rufus. Then her 1980's songs like "I Feel for You" and "Ain't Nobody" (also with Rufus). "I Feel for You" may help you understand why people sing her name. "Chaka Khan Chaka Khan" I think it might be only on the official music video and that's the one you should listen to. It's a cover of a Prince song but that "Chaka Khan" opening is why I think of it as her song.

The woman is Chaka Khan. You have to check out her song "I Feel For You". Produced by Prince in 1984 and the first R&B song to feature a rapper. Also her song Ain't Nobody which I'm sure you would know without even knowing that you know it. The rhythm guitar of Higher Love was performed by Nile Rogers, who you might know from the 70s band Chic (check out their songs "Good Times" and "Le Freak"), and the Daft Punk song Get Lucky.

If you want to dive into Chaka Khan who is the amazing voice complimenting Steve’s on this track, you could go with what was her biggest hit chart wise which was “I Feel For You” ( written by Prince). But, her music as part of Rufus is just as good and I would recommend a couple of strong R&B tracks which I know Amber will appreciate, “Ain’t Nobody” (which is my personal favorite), “Do You Love What You Feel” and her anthemic “I’m Every Woman”, and NO, that is not a Whitney song, Chaka recorded it first in 1978 for her debut solo album and it was her first solo hit. Whitney recorded a cover version in 1992 and while she did an amazing job, sorry, no one can match the original Chaka version, not even Whitney.

As Winwood reminisced, "My earliest memories are of the music in church and of my aunts and uncles singing the beautiful old hymns. 'Higher Love' is a generation past that, when things were not so much taken for granted, so that one has to plea, 'Bring me a higher love,' and the lines are all trying to explain why there must be higher love. A modern hymn, you might call it." Armed with spirituality, the resulting track became his breakthrough solo hit, flying high to No. 1 on August 29, 1986. The tune went on to receive two Grammys in 1987 for Record of the Year (against Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love") and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

Steve Winwood is definitely a rabbit-hole you want to go down! He's a multi-talented singer and songwriter having collaborated with numerous artists over the years. Winwood originally was a key member of several major acts of the 60s and 70s that include: the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, and the Eagles, as well as a successful solo career. As a solo artist, he's had numerous hit singles and continues to collaborate with multiple artists today -- most recently in 2020 with Steely Dan. Winwood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic in 2004.

If you saw Avengers - Endgame, you've definitely heard Steve Winwood in his group Traffic. In the opening scenes with Tony Stark stranded in space, the song playing in the back is Traffic's song "Dear Mr Fantasy". He's a talent for the ages with him in everything he's touched. There's a KZitem video from about 9 years ago of him playing on an acoustic version of a song he did back in the 60s with the Spencer Davis Group (EDIT: correcting the group he did this song with .... it's Blind Faith) titled "Can't Find My Way Home". What a voice!

Steve Winwood's discography is as long as your arm. He was part of notable groups like Traffic, Blind Faith, and The Spencer Davis Group. He became a household name in the 80s with hits like "Higher Love", "Valerie", "Back in the High Life", "The Finer Things", and perhaps his most famous song, "Roll With It".

Chaka Khan is the backup vocalist on this song. For your next Female Friday I suggest you play "TELL ME SOMETHING GOOD" by the funk band RUFUS. Chaka Khan was their lead singer. Such a good song. You and everyone else will love it!

The most amazing thing about this song and this whole album is that Winwood not only wrote and sang on all the songs but he also played ALL the instruments on ALL the songs.... and recorded it in his home built studio... on a farm.

It was the Arc of a Diver album that he played all the instruments on not this one. Nile Rodgers (from Chic) played guitar on this song and Joe Walsh plays guitar on two other songs on this album, so he didn't do everything himself on this one.

Chaka Kahn is no back up singer! Try her song "Ain't Nobody" for sure! And please check out Steve Winwood's "Roll With It" as others recommended. The video for that song is very creative - cool perspective. Thanks for bringing so much joy!

Steve Winwood has been around since the 60's. He, along with his brother Muff Winwood, Pete York and Spencer Davis, formed the rock band The Spencer Davis Group in 1963. Steve was only 15 at the time. He was their lead vocalist and, their biggest hit , "Gimme Some Lovin", was released in October 1966 when he was just 18. It's one you should really check out. I know you'll love it !

Steve Winwood has been in the musical spotlight since the age of 17 when he played for the Spencer Davis Group, then Blind Faith , Traffic and finally a brilliant solo career. I could give you a list of songs but my picks are “Valerie” and “ Arc of a Diver”. Thanks for giving Steve some earned recognition.

Now that you've found Steve Winwood, check him out when he was a teenager in the Spencer Davis Group. "Had To Cry Today" is a good one to start with, after that, find him singing with Traffic, "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" or "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone." You will not regret any of those selections! 😃
