My m42 cryogenic bowl gouge has never been close to as dull as that thing sharp..

Your probably right. I need to learn how to sharpen them properly.

Good vid. I found M2 rods online for about 20$ for 12" one, those don't even need heat treatment

Awesome! I still need to make a handle for the one I made. It doesn’t need to be tempered also.

Nice to see you turning on a Shopsmith! I just spent $80 on a 1/2" bowl gouge. I think I'll try a cold rolled 5/8". I like the grinder on the other end of the headstock.

I’m gonna try a larger diameter one myself! I’m gonna heat treat it though because the cutting edge goes dull fairly quickly. I’m not sure if it’s gonna work but it’s worth a shot. Thanks for watching!

I believe Nathan is correct. My bowl gouges have a deep V or U shape while my spindle gouges have a shallow oval flute. What kind of steel did you use? Most gauges that i have seen are tool steel or high speed steel.

It was an $18 piece of cold rolled steel from ace hardware. I think I could heat treat it and it may harden a little bit. This was the first attempt. It works but the edge wears down quickly.

I love it. Never thought of making my own but I will now. Your definition of the bowl vs. Spindle gouge is a bit off though. The difference is the flute and the grind on the tip. A bowl gouge has an oval or an elliptical flute with the grind coming down the sides creating wings. A spindle gouge has a round flute without the wings.

Thanks for the info. Every little bit counts. The bowl gouge could probably use a heat treat to harden the metal. I’ve yet to finish it. I guess I need to though. Thanks for watching!

Nice, I also think 100 dollars is crazy just for a gouge! I have made a couple with scrap spring steel and heat treat, they hold a pretty good edge!

Johnny, I getting ready to purchase a Shopsmith this weekend just primarily for the lathe for wood turning. My question is I’ve noticed on the back of your lathe you have a grinding wheel, what size is the grinding wheel and grit, how did you fasten it onto the backend and where did you get the wheel?

It is a 8” - 80 grit stone from Lowe’s. The ShopSmith I have came with the attachment for a saw blade. I converted it to a grinding wheel. My ShopSmith is from the 80’s and it does have vibration if the tail stock is not connected. If you are getting a mark V know that ShopSmith has discontinued quite a few of the parts so you will have to find them used or repair them yourself. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the compliment, but I still haven’t put a handle on it. It works good like it is. Thanks for watching!
