Used to go to a little corner grocery store in Louisville, KY. in the mid 70's they always had a big jar of pickled ring bologna on the meat counter, I used to get a chunk of bologna, crackers and a 16oz "Glass bottle" soft drink for .25 cents!

Hello! Glad you keep the Kentucky tradition going. "Pickle Dog" is a big favorite around here. Where did you get the plain ring bologna to experiment with? I've never seen any plain ring bologna for sale anywhere.

I'm from Michigan, I could get kogels there. It's been 30 years and I live in Texas now. I have to order it online now at $35. But its worth it.

I have to admit that I have never heard of ring bologna. I'll have to look around and see if I can find some around here. I'd love to smoke some of that!

Thanks, Tom! I grew up in Kentucky and miss this like crazy. I couldn't find it in Kansas and definitely can't find it here in Nova Scotia, but the groceries here have ring bologna. I'm going to give this a try--with pepper for my husband, mild for me. Any suggestions for alternate spice mix for the mild version?

Barbara Caldwell-Pease Were in Kentucky, I'm from Bardstown. I've had to recreate many of my favorites since living in NY and now TX. You could just cut the red pepper in half or even leave it out.

Memories from my childhood. My grandfather sometimes took me to a small grocery store in Lansing, Michigan, near where we lived. The proprietor kept a large jar of pickled bologna on the counter but the bologna was in two to three inch chunks. My grandfather would buy a piece and give me a slice. I like bologna but pickled bologna was too hot and spicy for my delicate palate. It has been 60 years since I've tasted it.

Yeah, pickled sausages are very popular up in that neck of the woods. Making it yourself you can adjust the heat level.
