Here is the classic lake freighter Hon. James L. Oberstar arriving in Duluth, Minnesota shortly after 2am on April 22, 2024. She was hauling a split load of limestone from Stoneport, Michigan and dolomite from Meldrum Bay, Ontario to be discharged at the Hallett 5 dock in West Duluth. After unloading she would eventually move to the Superior side of the harbor and load taconite pellets at the Burlington Northern dock which she would deliver to Toledo, Ohio. But that's something we'll cover in an upcoming video.
This video covers the Oberstar's entrance through the Duluth shipping canal, passing under the Aerial Lift Bridge along the way. I then moved over to Rice's Point to catch more footage of the Oberstar as she passed under the John A. Blatnik bridge. While there was understandably no salute given due to the late hour of the Oberstar's arrival, plenty of ambient noises are prominent in this video. This includes the rumble from the Oberstar's diesel engines, the clanking of the hatch clamps being removed by crewmen on the deck, and the squawking of birds. Indeed, the amount of bird activity at 2am is quite impressive. With the smelt run taking place, the seagulls are using any opportunity to feed. (Note: Several smelt fishermen were also out this night, using their nets to scoop up the smelt. In addition to the fisherman spotted in the opening scene of the video, you may notice several people fishing on the south pier on the opposite side of the canal.)
One other observation I made on this arrival is that the Oberstar's crew had turned on all of the lights on the self-unloading boom by the time they got to Rice's Point. I don't recall ever capturing this before. Not only were there bright white lights inside the boom itself, but several red lights lining the top of the boom.
The 806-foot Hon. James L. Oberstar started service in 1959, originally named the Shenango II. From 1967 to 2011, she was named the Charles M. Beeghly as she sailed for Interlake Steamship. In 2011, she was named in honor of the former Congressman from Minnesota who supported Great Lakes shipping and the maritime industry in general. In 2008, her steam turbine was replaced with two Rolls-Royce Marine Bergen 6-cylinder B32:40L6P diesel engines each rated at 4,079 b.h.p. A scrubbing system is in place to remove particulates and pollutants from her exhaust. She can carry up to 31,000 tons of cargo in her five cargo holds. Those holds are accessed by 25 hatches. A gravity-fed conveyor system allows her to unload her own cargo, using a 250-foot unloading boom.
