Okay, maybe not so mean... but definitely big and green!
Here is the saltwater ship Jessica B arriving empty in Duluth, Minnesota on the morning of April 22, 2024. She sat at anchor outside the Duluth piers for a couple of days before arriving through the canal to load wheat at the Riverland Ag dock for eventual delivery to Savona, Italy. (No doubt that wheat will be turned into a whole lotta pasta!) On her way in through the shipping canal, the Jessica B let out a slightly raspy captain's salute, with the Aerial Lift Bridge responding in return. Waiting on the other side of the lift bridge was the tugboat North Carolina, who would tie up to the Jessica B's stern and help her maneuver to the dock.
Keen observers will note that the Jessica B's port anchor is missing, with just a short length of anchor chain dangling from the hole where her anchor would normally be. She apparently lost the anchor while sitting outside of Duluth. At some point the anchor may be recovered, so it will be interesting to see when (and if) that happens!
The 656-foot long Jessica B was launched in 2003, originally sailing under the name Pochard S. before becoming the Jessica B in 2022. She is a bulk carrier and is registered in the Marshall Islands. She has a gross tonnage of 22,743 tons, with a summer deadweight of 37,384 tons. Four deck-mounted cranes are available to assist with loading and unloading of package cargo.
