Recently, KEMIMOTO reached out and asked if I'd be interested in trying their rear passenger footpads for the US model CT125. I absolutely said yes!
There's a coffee shop right near me, as well as a grocery store, and sometimes I'd really like to zip over with my partner without having to hop in the car or walk. I know I have the XR, but sometimes I want the simplicity of the Trail 125, with its semi-automatic transmission. Its lower seat height and center of gravity makes it ideal for short neighborhood errands.
I had already been thinking this would be a great route to go to have a quick way to zip around, and when KEMIMOTO reached out I was definitely excited to give this a try.
In the box you get your passenger foot pegs, the clamps that are shaped to the CT125 swingarms, the necessary bolts and lock washers, directions to install them, and a 5mm Allen key.
The quality of the footpegs is impressive. At the time of this review they are $79.04 USD on Amazon, and that seems reasonable for what they are. The footpegs are CNC machined aluminum which has been anodized black. They're sturdy without being heavy. That's an important feature for an accessory when you're working with 8hp. The included hardware is of good quality, and everything I needed to do the job was there....except a 6mm Allen, but we will get back to that in a second. I was impressed that the clamps had felt lining the side that contacts the swingarm in order to protect it from scratches. If it did not have this I would have added some protective 3M tape to the frame.
Mounting the foot-pegs was really easy. There's only two bolts for each of the clamps to tighten it down onto the swingarm. The included 5mm wrench is for this very purpose. One of my only gripes with this is that there is not a specified torque value in KEMIMOTO's instructions. It merely says to tighten the foot peg down. If you've ever worked on a bicycle or motorcycle you'll know that it's very easy to strip aluminum and that torque values are very important. I'd like to see KEMIMOTO add a torque value for these bolts in the future. Mounting the foot peg itself to the clamp is also very easy and requires one bolt through each clamp. This bolt is bigger than the two used to mount the clamp but also comes with a lock washer. The foot peg has a male and female style square to help set the foot peg into its proper position. I liked this because it helps ensure the foot peg won't spin and that it's in the correct position.
The hardest part of installing these was wiggling the tool back behind the clamp to tighten the bolts. Overall I'd say the difficulty of these was a 3/10. If you aren't mechanically inclined you will still find this very easy. Just make sure when you install these you do it with the bike on it's center stand. It'll be helpful having it out of the way. The harder side to install was the chain side because it is more cramped with the chain and the protector, so keep that in mind too.
With them installed it was time for a test ride and me and my partner took it for a quick spin around the apartment complex and my garage. We do not have a passenger seat yet, so we did not want to venture too far. She was very impressed at how comfortable she felt on them. Her legs were at the right angle and she was not too high or too low with them. Her feet did not contact mine or any of the controls. Because this was a test she was wearing sandals but because of the proximity to the chain, ENSURE YOUR PASSENGER IS WEARING BOOTS. She will be wearing boots whenever we ride this in the future.
I'm very impressed at the quality of these and at the ease of installation. KEMIMOTO did a great job with these and if you're looking for an inexpensive, high-quality solution to carrying a passenger on your US model CT125, this is probably it.
If you have any questions about these drop me a comment below, or if you use them, let me know how they're working out!
See you next time!
-Jake
