Joe, Slovenians have been using sheds for hundreds of years. Their hives are like cabinets. The bees come and go from the outside and the beekeeper opens the back door. Your hive setup is awesome. I wish you sold your hives. Great videos. Susan N W Georgia
Exactly what I was looking for. Thakns for this idea!!! Looking great 👍

Nice Job Joe! I mentioned you in my 100th Q&A Video. Do you have any updates for us? Is this still working out for you? What changes would you have made? Thanks and I wish you all the best.

Nice. I want to move to the mountains on to a farm. I often think about putting the hives in the barn. They're sheltered, high enough to not be harrassed by bears, etc.

Bees like to move up not side ways that's why long hives produce more brood than anything. Indoor hives have been a staple in Slovenia forever. Nice set up.

VERY interesting idea! I think they produce so much honey from all the ornamental flowers in the city that they do not find in the farmland! I know that they love my raspberries as well and have been seeing some russian bees recently so I assume that someone has a hive nearby recently.

Verry good idea the bees are producing more honey because they don’t need to work hard to keep the hive temperature regulated which means consuming less honey

It isn't natural to go sideways for bees so when You add supers that is where they start storing honey. People saying that long hives are awesome cos they are easy to work - yes but not much honey is being produced.

I know you have said you don't have plans for your hive. But it the basic concept is that you need 3/8 inch space on all sides of your frames to start the project?

Great vid Joe. I watched your earlier ones too. Ive been considering building a long lang myself. Interesting that you and others think of them as brood makers. Putting supers on them sort of defeats the purpose of having a long lang. You are back to lifting boxes. But hey if you need to then you need to. I love your indoor idea, brilliant!. Now Im not sure if I will build a long lang. Did you get any honey before you added supers, or was it just enough to sustain the bees. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. This kind of thing helps everyone. Regards Ben

I'm just now trying to get in to bee keeping. I am really wanting to shield them away from the winter and bears, I was curious of how the bees would react indoors verses outside. Are they more aggressive when you open them up?
@baddestbees3347
5 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Brooks No, definitely NOT MORE AGGRESSIVE, nothing wrong with WINTERING in shed,long as have access to outside so they can make cleansing flights.BUT I WOULDN'T do this in Summer unless you HAVE TO.. REASON being is small hive beetles will take over VERY FAST if Hive not Very Strong,I mean In couple days,stress bees to point of Absconding in a few days,at least here in Mo..PLUS Bees won't get early sun and warm up so they start flying,so I imagine these shed bees get a later start than if they were outside,just what I think about it..

Jonathan Brooks your welcome,and what I shoot for wintering successful is food, waaaay more than people think,big clusters, AND ventilation, you pull that off, you'll have yourself one very good hive come spring.

When you say honey production wasn't very good before putting on the super, would you not recommend this to someone who would like to get Honey production as well as pollination? The idea of not having 4-5 separate boxes is very appealing, but we definitely want to be able to produce honey
@baddestbees3347
5 жыл бұрын
Nate Groshek could it be there wasn't flowers producing nectar until he supered and would've been fine leaving be or adding queen excluder.Or could it BE PROOF Bees build VERTICALLY NOT HORIZONTALLY.Id say proof.But bees HAVE to build horizontal if don't have vertical,I'd left them alone personally,soon as they fill around the brood THEN they'll fill supers, I imagine what they done here,prob filling brood nest when he wanted filling his honey,that's why u should build them up FOR the Flow,Not ON the Flow..

Do you think keeping bees in a shed would make it easier to prevent a swarm from happening by blocking the exits? I also live in a residential area, swarming and robbing are my main concerns. Enjoyed the video, thanks
@linr2870

The only way to prevent a swarm is add more room and/or split the hive.

To prevent swarming especially in a residential area you need to clip queens in do your splits or more space
