1:15- "He's one-armed, half-blind and he gets seasick!" Yes...but he's the only one-armed, half-blind, seasick admiral known to history that could blow French ships into smithereens like nobody's business.

Actually ironically enough only one French ship was sunk at Trafalgar; most others were captured since at this point in history it was more economical to capture enemy ships for your own than to build them from scratch

@@frankydman they tried not to sink them because the Royal Navy paid the crew of their ship for capturing the other war ship. they captured about 14 of the French and Spanish ships during Nelson's last battle some of them sank in the storm following the Battle

I've always thought Lord Nelson should have been featured in Stupid Deaths. He ordered the British musketeers/riflemen not to go into the rigging to shoot at both the French on the decks of their ships and at the French musketeers in the rigging of their ships shooting at the British on the decks of theirs. Then he appeared on deck at the height of the battle in his finest uniform, which could be excused as a means to improve his sailors' morale. Could be, except a French musketeer in the rigging of a French ship spotted Nelson in all his finery, took careful aim--since he didn't have to worry about any British musketeers, since there were none by Nelson's orders--and shot Nelson dead. Bit of a blow for the sailors' morale, that! Well, technically it was inspiring to morale. The enemy's, that is, but you can't have everything. Then there's his signal "England expects each man to do his duty." Not a bad slogan, but that 'expects' does make it seem as though Nelson hadn't much confidence in his men. As the story goes, it was going to be "England is confident" but that would have taken one or two more signal flags. MInd you, you don't get that nice alliteration there at the start, so I suppose it evens out. .

I have been on board HMS Victory a few times over the years. sadly the first time I was sick when we was in Nelson's cabin due to me having a Hot dog with raw onions in it shortly before going on board the historic ship. I don't think the warm stuffy weather on the day of our visit helped much either. the sailor who was showing the visitors around understood what had happened and was a great help with cleaning up my little mess.

Nelson once defied orders by his superior at Copenhagen by deliberately lifting his spyglass to the blind eye and going "I really do not see the signal." His conversation with the Duke of Wellington was remembered as ""He entered at once into conversation with me, if I can call it conversation, for it was almost all on his side and all about himself and, in reality, a style so vain and so silly as to surprise and almost disgust me." Gets shot and goes "Hardy, I do believe they have done it at last .... my backbone is shot through". Hardy ran for a surgeon, and Nelson insisted "You can do nothing for me. I have but a short time to live. My back is shot through"
@WorldWar2freak94

There is more to the conversation with Wellington. At first Nelson didn’t know that person he was taking to was Wellington. After he found out who he was, he changed his tune and afterwards Wellington had nothing but praise for Nelson.

Nope. He did say that, too, but his actual LAST words were "Thank God I have done my duty." Any book on Nelson, and the account of the surgeon who was tending to him in his last hours, will tell you that.

Yeah, and the surgeon tending to Nelson before he died would have no reason to fudge the truth to make sure he was recorded as saying something dignified and patriotic before he died as opposed to "rub rub drink drink fan fan" or "I'm so sorry I think I've shat myself".

Well... according to Beatty, Nelson's surgeon, (which is written out in full in Warner's book 'Nelson's Battles'), Nelson "...pronounced distinctly these last words: 'Thank God, I have done my duty'; and this great sentiment he continued to repeat so long as he was able to give it utterance." So, according to him, Nelson said "Kiss me," then repeated "drink, drink" etc, then "I've done my duty" Anyway, I think he'd have wanted "I've done my duty." to go down as his last words, not 'kiss me!" :-p

@scottl20az Patton was the greatest tank commander i n history and he was a loudmouthed warmonger who believed in reincarnation and carried pearl handled pistols. He was badass to be sure, but our heroes are never perfect. They are human. He did suffer from sea sickness, he did lack an arm and he was born rather sickly as well. Just because he's a hero doesn't mean they can't poke fun.
