It’s a summer rainy night. I’m stranded at a movie theatre so I ask a girl I barely knew from my high school for a ride home. She drives me home with this mysterious song on the radio. Did I tell you it was pouring rain? Yada yada yada 36 years latter we’re still married, 2 grown kids and a new grandson. Thanks 10CC, you did great lads.

This is a legendary sound that is etched in the collective memory of millions of people who appreciate real musical genius. And I learned something new from this brilliant documentary of 10CC's hit. I had no idea that Godley and Creme were part of the original band 😮. Thank you for another lesson in the love of music, Prof!

IMO this song defines the 70’s, just as Cry (Godley & Creme) defines the 80’s. It’s shocking that those 2 masterpieces, although so inextricably tied to the their respective decades, are from the same geniuses. I’m Not In Love has always been one of my favorite songs of any decade, and of any genre, just as Cry is, ever since they each came out. And I still feel the same. Some 8-9 years ago I happened upon a “Making of” video on this song. I was shocked at what they went through, as computers and synthesizers have made things so simple these days. They explained that, after they recorded all the loops of voices, they used the mixing board as its own instrument. They slid the volume up on each appropriate note of the chord they wanted. Like I said, genius. Songs like this make me wonder what I’ve missed out on through all these decades, music that isn’t well known due to the politics (read: corruption) of the record industry. All I know is, at least I got to experience the 70’s and 80’s. And as indie became more accessible, so were bands like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Nick Cave, etc.

Love the channel Prof, and this episode was excellent. There are a couple of errors I just needed to mention - there's no acoustic guitar on the track. Graham Gouldman played clean Gibson Les Paul to create the rhythm guitar part. Several others have mentioned that Godley & Creme left after the 4th 10cc album "How Dare You?" - Stewart & Gouldman continued with the 10cc name and brought out "Deceptive Bends" which is basically just 3 people playing almost everything - Stewart, Gouldman and their drummer (from live gigs when Godley was singing lead) Paul Burgess - that's where "The Things We Do For Love" comes from, and "Dreadlock Holiday" was from an even later album called "Bloody Tourists". On the album "The Original Soundtrack", they did actually use the "I'm Not In Love" choir sound on other tracks - it's quite noticeable on "Blackmail", but played in a more staccato fashion. It is also possible to buy that sound - Eric Stewart digitised the INIL Choir tracks and it can be purchased and played (which I have indeed done!). Eric was 10cc's engineer right from the beginning and his vision has contributed to the pristine audio quality of 10cc over the decades. And of course Strawberry Studios belonged to 10cc at the time this was being done. Eric Stewart has written a fascinating biography which is well worth a read if you haven't already, and gives a lot of background on his entire musical career, the 10cc split and so on. Thanks again for a brilliant channel!

I was in the Navy in 1975 and my high school sweetheart whom I was going to marry sent me a dear John letter. I was crushed and thoroughly heartbroken. I never wanted to have a long term relationship again. I was through with heartbreak. And I absolutely loved this song at the time. Well, my sister hooked me up with a friend of hers back home. I began writing and calling her on the phone, however, I kept telling myself that I would have a relationship with this girl but I would keep it at arm’s length. I didn’t want to get serious. Time passes as I write and call her. This girl really had a sincere liking for me even though we never met in person. I didn’t realize it at the time but I started loving her even before I met her. I kept listening to this song and telling myself that I’m not in love but I could see that the song was was about me. I went back home on leave and was only there with her for about a week before I asked her to marry me. We just celebrated our 47th anniversary. And this song had a HUGE part in that. Great video! It’s put a whole new perspective on the song.

The thing I loved about this song, besides the different sound, was that it was obvious that the singer absolutely is in love the first time you hear it. The "be quiet, big boys don't cry" part fit into that. Crying, or telling someone you love them, falls into the same category.

One guy asked the guy who's house we were at why he still had a picture of his ex-girlfriend on his wall & he said it was hiding a nail hole on his wall. Well he went to the bathroom & the same guy got up & looked behind the photo & informed us there was no hole behind it. Later this song came out & several of us were listening to it on the radio & we all remembered that conversation & the no hole on the wall!

Once again, Professor, you've changed my mind about a song 😊. I hated I'm Not In Love for most of my life up until a few years ago. I finally re-listened to it when Guardians of the Galaxy came out and realized I was probably coming to the wrong conclusion about the lyrics 😏. I'm glad to see that I'd finally gotten it right. And being as overplayed as it was, that just added to the irritation. I've grown to not mind it so much over the long years tho. But anyone in the know knew the true genius of this act as a thinking man's juggernaut. They wrote incredible lyrics backed with fabulous musicianship, all wrapped up in a pop-rock sheen that could almost equal The Beatles in depth and execution. BTW-- pretty sure Godley & Creme left after the 4th album (How Dare You). Graham & Gouldman then released 'Deceptive Bends',which was pretty close to the genius of the first 4 albums. Dreadlock Holiday came out afterwards. Thanks for all you do,bro! T

First time I ever heard this song, it was on an AM station in the 80’s. I didn’t catch the name of the song, or group. I had no clue who sang it, but its haunting lyrics were embedded in my brain for years. I didn’t hear it again until maybe 1999/2000 when it was playing in a McDonald’s. Desperate to know what the name of the song and artist was, I went up to a complete stranger (probably in his early 40’s) and asked him, “Excuse me, do you have any idea what the name of this song is?” Without hesitation, he said, “It’s called I’m Not in Love, by 10CC” Can’t tell you how relieved I was finally knowing what the song was that drove me crazy, for years, not knowing the name of it. Every time I hear it now, I think of that complete stranger in McDonald’s that was kind enough to tell me the information I so desperately needed

Love this friggin' song. "Good Morning, Judge" is another great one of theirs. But fun fact, as per Warren Huart (Produce Like a Pro), Billy Joel used 10cc's wall of voices vocal track as backing in his 1977 hit, "Just the Way You Are."

Memories - maybe at 15 years old, awkwardly dancing a slow with a friend, holding her close, feeling her warmth and her hands on my shoulders, bending my head down, my nose close to her collar to breathe in her scent. The song was already a few years old, my sister had the single and I knew it by heart - had it in my heart. Thank you Clare, that was quite a moment. Why did it have to end? Final fade out, arms disengaged, bodies separated and awkward, slightly embarrassed thank you. Adolescence is so clumsy. Next up, Three Times a Lady by Lionel Richie. Catherine, would you care to dance with me?

The song was, is, and will remain an incredible breakout and creative song. I was swept up by the music when I first heard it. I somehow knew he was being facetious, but I was going through a tough (puppy love) break-up and chose to feel the song as it was lyrically written. The fact that people this young could write such a creative piece, let alone pull off the impossible with a tiny 3-track, I think he said, says volumes! There is NO DOUBT, there was magic in the air in the seventies musically. So many incredible and inspired young people! I'm proud to have shared the times and music with them... Oh and thank you, Prof of Rock, for bringing this great memory back!

And the deep cuts from "The Original Soundtrack" and "How Dare You" albums could have been classics in their own right! For instance, "Don't Hang Up" is almost a mini-movie chronicling a breakup. "Wall Street Shuffle" is as relevant today as it was then!

I’m so surprised this was not a number one hit. It seemed like it was everywhere, as if it had a life of its own. I loved it back then, and I still do. It’s a really good song by a really good group and had such a curious but beautiful and enthralling background vocals. It was years before I actually learned how those vocals were created. Anyhow, “I’m Not in Love” is on my list as one of the top 25 songs of my life!

This song is a masterpiece. There is a video on the youtube, where they, the musicians of the band 10 CC, show all the process they had to endure to create this great song. I was watching an interview with musician and producer Trevor Horn, and he said that every time they are in a studio recording, they encounter problems most of the time, which makes the musicians quit the song, give up, due to difficulties in recording their song. Then Trevor calls the people, then he plays I'm Not In Love, and he explains to the musicians how that song was created. They realize that their problem is nothing, if 10 CC created that song, they immediately consider their need to go back into the studio, with the understanding that they could fix their problems and finish recording their song. 10 CC made the impossible, and created this song which I love very much and I never get tired of hearing.
