Alaskan mosquitoes can't hold a candle to the ones in Louisiana. They may be bigger, but the numbers just cannot compare.

Any studies done on long term effects of breathing various things in? Genuinely curious and I might check for some today. They are the worst to deal with in spring. That's why I love fall so much. No bugs.

I always wondered how the indigenous Native Americans dealt with mosquitoes back in the primitive days. There had to have been a way.

For people that says marigolds mosquitoes doesn't like them they must not grow flowers because I can tell you that mosquitoes will land right on the marigolds and it doesn't even affect them all at all they're all over the marigolds in fact I quite frankly think that they like them

Ended up in the hospital with dengue fever for a week last year in Thailand. They weren’t in swarms like I’m used to working in the Pointe à la Hache swamps on barge rigs. Those thermacell things woulda sure been nice but we can’t have a heat source like that on the rig. Never been in Alaska outside of the drill season on the slope so never seen what those bugs are like up there but I’m sure a lot of the reason they’re so bad is the moisture is in the soil or tundra year round.

Your "last resort," I've found, is the best "first resort." I've tried many of those products, and I've found them pretty much useless. Perhaps I have a high tolerance, but by the time I'm distracted to the point that I have to do something, 100% deet is all that really works. That's not quite fair, I have noticed that certain eucalyptus repellents can work, but not as well, and if you sweat while wearing them, they wash off quickly. They also wear out in only a few hours. However, they're safer for pets who might want to lick them off. I've been bitten so often that, except for a few of the first bites of the year, my skin doesn't react. My main issue is the distraction of skeeters buzzing about (quite annoying when they bounce between one's glasses and eyeballs). If I'm not distracted by the task at hand, their initial sting is obnoxious. Anyway, all those gizmos and thingamajigs, none of them work as well as a simple barrier. Keep the door closed, the window screens in place. Outdoors? nets and thick clothing. Too hot for thick clothing? Skin applied repellent is better than nothing, but you will get bit. Those heat-activated gadgets that require constant refills of reactant and fuel would only work if you're not moving, and even then, I found them worthless. Even a good fan (with access to electricity) is much better.

Does a smoke bath work if you're in the wilderness?
@tananam9782
Жыл бұрын
@@tomnguyen8546 when you're in the smoke... Sorta. But the trade there is getting bit and buzzing about versus choking on smoke. Being near smoke does have an effect, but having been near smoke (that is, away from the fire, only smelling of smoke) doesn't seem to have much effect in my experience. It does have an effect on other animals though. Smoke does seem to mask a humans inherent stinkiness. For example, it may confuse downwind bears or moose... That may or may not be a good thing.

2:52 blue shirts, the color of the new LightShine Alaska shirts (can't figure that one out). White long-sleeve T-shirt w/ permenthrin, good for 6 washes. Ben's brand 100% DEET and doesn't smell. ThermaCell--must try, tx!! CAN you renew the pads' ingredients yourself??
