FIRE attended The 26th Annual Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention at the Convention Center to talk with people about free expression and tattoos.
Tattoos have faced a fair amount of government censorship over the years, just like speech - and we think the similarities are instructive.
People get tattoos as a way to express themselves, to share their ideas, preferences, opinions, and beliefs about the world. On the other hand, some people hate tattoos and think they're ugly and offensive.
But a tattoo you don't like is just like speech you don't like. And in both cases, the reaction should be the same: If you don't like a tattoo, or tattoos in general, don't get tattooed.
Trying to stop others from getting tattoos, however, is a violation of their individual freedoms - just like preventing others from speaking because you dislike their speech is a violation of their First Amendment rights.
