FIRE was in Nashville on May 2 arguing on behalf of Kimberly Diei, a former pharmacy school student threatened with expulsion for her personal social media posts, including a post about @iamcardib’s popular song WAP.
In 2021, Kim sued the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy after university admins investigated her twice, claiming her social media activity was too “crude,” “vulgar,” and “sexual.” Kim enjoys commenting on topics of interest to her and other young social media users, occasionally expressing her views about sexuality.
But what a young woman says about sexuality on social media has nothing to do with her ability to be a pharmacist.
“The university was more concerned about policing my personal social media than providing me with an education,” said Diei. “I’m excited to have my day in court and shine a light on that injustice.”
“UT tried to expel Kim because of social media posts admiring the bravado of icons like Cardi B and Beyoncé,” said FIRE attorney Greg Greubel. “If UT can get away with investigating students under the guise of vague professionalism standards for simply engaging with popular culture, no student expression is safe.
Kim is standing up and speaking out on behalf of every student, and we will not stop fighting for her.”
