Is rephasing and connecting cylinders in series the same thing?

The volumes need to match. In the example in this video, you would need two different sizes of cylinders to get the cap end volume of one to match the rod end volume of the other. Beyond that, the cylinders need a bypass built into them for when the cylinder is either fully extended or fully retracted. This makes it much easier to get oil into the middle portion of the circuit when you first start it up. A large shock to one of them could also cause a small amount of leakage across the piston resulting in them not being synced anymore. Having this bypass allows you to easily resync them. This bypass isn't on most cylinders.
