Hello! How does Sulfuric acid remove contaminants from used automotive oil? What major reaction mechanism is evident?

Good question - I'm not very involved in re-refining so I can't speak much to the chemical reaction there. From what I understand though, sulphuric acid is mostly used to dissolve gum and sludge - this on its own is not enough because you then need to neutralise the acid, precipitate out the produced salt and then filter. If you leave any sulphuric acid in it would act as an oxidation catalyst.

Interesting compound. It makes Viscosity grades like 0w40 possible I guess. There are PAO-based oils with Pourpoints in the Region of -50 to -60 Celsius.

SO does a PAO require VI improvers too? Or are there intrinsic qualities in a synthetic that negate this? Thank you

Generally no, most of the full PAOs have a high enough VI that additives aren't needed to supplement.

Which additives would you suggest for a pyrolysis plastic oil with high bromine number?

Anti-waxing and pour point speaking

I don't work as a formulator so I can't really point you to specific additives. Most of the Pour Point Depressants are Polymethacrylates though, there won't be a whole lot of variety.
