When you get to a certain level of success there can be something a little bit strange about telling people what you do. It feels almost like bragging. I know someone who has been the CEO of his own company for 20+ years. But at social events he will just say, “I work for a software company.”
Brandon Mahoney started us off by sharing why he suggested this topic.
Karen Loomis stepped right up and said we all need to learn to be willing to toot our own horn. Using case studies allows her to show what she does but not make it about her.
Inga Hebdon believes there is a cultural element to it. Being from Germany she has noticed that Germans (generalizing of course) brag less about themselves than we do here in the US.
What I do know is that trotting out all your credentials when someone doesn’t get what you do and thinks it’s easy or not actually work, isn’t helpful.
How do you toot your own horn without coming across as arrogant or pretentious?
