This is a really good explanation of the learning curve. Thanks for making it.

Honestly the most fun part of losing in this game, is the fact that your abandoned fortresses are still in the world, the sense of history and familiarity with your randomly regenerate world keeps on building, you start to recognize empires and factions, you remember geography, you build memories and experiences with the map, maybe send a retrieval party to bring artifacts to on of the older fortresses. This is the most unique part of the game that keeps me coming back over and over again

You made me realise that I've become too cautious with experience. Time to try new things I guess

I think its the same idea project zomboid conveys of, you cant win, you can just achieve your goals or die trying. Tbh i wish late game dwarf fortress was even harder lol.

Yeah I got into DF after steam release and heard a lot about “losing is fun” and while that phrase is completely true it also misses a lot of the fun of every tiny win. I remember my first migrant wave, my first siege defense, the first time my dwarves had a party. Once you learn the UI and the basics, everything is fun!

Dorf Fort (both fortress and adventure mode) is much like a sandcastle.

This is a great way of putting it. "Losing is fun" is as much an invitation to new players to jump into the game as it is an ironic little joke among dedicated fans about how easy it is to lose: You can have fun even if you lose!

Excellent video, glad this came up on my recommended. Just started the game earlier this month and this summarizes a lot of the feelings I've been having.

Well-made video, surprising find. Not sure how you have good quality like this and only 61 subscribers, but I'll make it 62.

When I first got into the game I complained about the game being far too easy. I felt as though all those reddit posts and youtube videos about "hardest game in the world" were true, and tried the game solely because of that. What a mistake. Well I would prefer some more direct danger (ie. digging Siegers) I understand that this is not a popular opinion and that I need to seek out difficulty to truly get difficulty. After sinking ~400 hours into the game, I've grown accustomed to this and couldn't be happier with my decision.

My only problem with this vid is saying that you had to memorize the keys in the old days. They were literally written on the side of the screen back then. Otherwise, very good vid.

I agree, I think it was the no-mouse plus Ascii combo. I've become quite comfortable navigating the keys but it took me a while for my first text based game.
