I think Born Again is essential as an epilogue to this run. Matt IS crushed. Sure, we get O'Neil's (pretty good) run between them, but he is still a wreck. Born Again also continues everything from this run: Fisk's growing paranoia, Foggy growing as a man and Matt finally getting peace from inner demons (which is hilarious, considering what happens immediately after, but still). I do think runs after this one get a little worse: Danny's had this one arc that is just BAD and Nocenti is really good if you vibe with her style. I do, but it's not everybody's cup of tea.

The Frank Miller / Klaus Janson period of DD was not only a high point for the almost-canceled-series beforehand, it's a benchmark for one of the greatest Marvel creator teams ever. I highly recommend Frank Miller / Bill Sienkiewicz's Elektra Assassin solo series which followed soon after, also outstanding.

one of the things that I absolutely hated is that DD writers practically ignored everything that happened in Waid's Run aka the Greatest Run ever. Waid's Run is fantastic bc its different, its a lighter take on the character but its still true to the character of daredevil. heck the whole reason that it was made was bc DD prior to Waid's run was basically Zeb Wells Spider-Man. he was constantly getting shit on, being a dark loner, losing people he loves and being sad and depressed 24/7. and DD in the run decides that he needs to be less dark so it doesnt feel forced be he acknowledges it and I mean the run literally starts with DD trying to stop The Spot from Assassinating a well known Drug dealer's Bride at a Wedding. and in some cases I consider this run to be the perfect ending for DD comics. I mean Daredevil started out as a campy hero who for a few years was just that and it wasnt until Frank Millers Run where he became a Dark and Brooding vigilante who's life in constantly in the gutter and for Waid to bring him back to what he originally was while respecting the previous run's and still keeping it dark at times while being funny and lighthearted is just such a satisfying ending to his character...........................................................and then the next few runs ignored everything that happened in Waid's Run.

Waid's run was great and my intro to the character but the ending didn't actually make sense for reasons that Soule's run covered, plus the fact that Matt would open himself up to neverending legal trouble if he did do what he did. Soule's run gets trashed for having to follow Waid's run, but after having read almost every run from Frank Miller's and onward I can say that I think Soule's run is in my top 3 if only for the fact that I think he understood Matt's character better than most writers. 1 Nocenti 2 Miller 3 Soule 4 Waid 5 Bendis 6 Zdarsky 7 Brubaker 8 O'Neil 9 Diggle Haven't read all of Chichester's or Kelly's

Calling the Bendis and Brubaker runs "basically Zeb Wells Spider-Man" is quite the take. Yeah, Matt's life sucked but the writing is way better. Also, unlike Spider-Man, there's an inherent pessimism to Matt's character. What makes Matt interesting is he's self-destruvtive and a hypocrite. His life is supposed to be messy. Spider-Man's themes have always been aboit reponsibility and growing in maturity. Daredevil's themes since Millar's run have basically been a dtory of Captain Ahab vs Moby Dick. Waid's run cooled it down a little but it never could uave lasted, the character would lose so mich of who he was if we stuck with how Waid's run ended

As someone that's recently read all of Daredevil's comics (the main comic anyway) and saw the ups and pretty middling points at times (mostly stuff post Miller; definitely wouldn't call any run bad), I find it kind of fitting you're talking about Miller's time on the book. I will always recommend people read the Miller comics to really get a feel for the character and why people are so passionate about him. Of course people should also read the Daredevil stuff that isn't done by Miller cause his stuff ain't the end all be all for daredevil in my opinion. It's a landmark run and influenced the character to this very day but there's runs that are just the slightest bit better.
