In the early 19th century, freed African Nova Scotians founded a town just outside of Halifax and called it Africville.
For 150 years the community of Africville persevered despite neglect and contempt from the government of Halifax, who deprived them of paved roads, clean water, sewage treatment, stable electricity and street lamps. Despite that Africville and its residents were independent and built a good life for themselves.
That all changed in the 1960s, as Halifax adopted urban renewal policies that were gaining popularity across North America and Europe. Policies that led the government to force Africville residents from their homes and bulldoze the town down.
