That's exactly what I did in my mid years in the army. I used to micromanage everything because I didn't trust anyone to do things right. The guys were just there and weren't really learning anything. But at least the mission got done and quickly. Then I finally had a soldier who asked me to teach them some advanced stuff. Since then I'd train my guys not only to do their job, but my job and the more advanced stuff. It gave me more freedom to do other things, I can leave and know they are going to get the mission done in a timely manner. All other leadership were jealous and thought I was just winning the soldier lottery every time. I also made sure to take care of the soldiers needs ahead of my own, planned ahead and signed out gear that'll make things easier and more comfortable in the field, improved quality of life in a shitty situation. And I did all the shitty stuff with them. All my soldiers ended up becoming top tier. You build respect both ways, change their negative mindset into a realistic positive one, and motivate them to keep advancing. It's rare to see people in leadership positions doing this. It always makes me happy to see it.

Stanley, you've helped my start my own biz this year and are still helping me get off the ground and provide for my family. Love you brother. Our gov hates us, and their legislation is evidence. I hired a guy for heavy load transporting in a big rig. All the other drivers refused to work with him said he was lazy and just stood around. Well in talking with him I realized something, He was carrer military before me hiring him he went in at 18 was a heavy transport driver there for 15 years then was discharged from being blown up by a roadside bomb. Well all he was used to was taking orders and completing tasks you dont think for yourself once I explained it to the other guys that he needs direction/orders give him the tasks and he will get it done. He was now known as the guy who gets it done. Learn the person dont expect that every person can be what you expect.

You sir have the right mix for your crews .... this has grown your success. my question is why have so many other outfits have not figured that out. The only thing I can think of is that they think selfishly . When you think of how things effect others then you create a good atmosphere for all. I would have loved to work with and for you in my youth. You have many of the qualities that my father and uncle had. You are "old school" and that is the best.

Zach is a hammer when you need to drive a bunch of nails. All Zach needs is the jobsite "foreman" or "leadman" to step up and do their jobs/roles and give him direction. Give a guy like Zach his first 5 things to do, and since you're the leader/foreman, all you have to do is think of 5 more things for him to do after that. It's that simple. Easy peezy.

I've said a ton of times as a small business owner "I can teach you anything except honesty and work ethic" I would literally rather you have those two things than all the experience in the world. Unfortunately, my industry had a delayed response to the governments reaction to Covid, so I had to let everybody go, but as I'm rebuilding, I still get a text a week from one of my guys wanting to come back. Don't get me wrong, with no experience can come some head shaking moments, like blowing the grass on the street side easement, right at the cars parked a foot away (Just real happy I caught it within seconds before he nabbed some gravel with that grass 🤣). He never did it again though, and every person that wanted it got a hand washed car, lol

There is an issue with young workers today. The number that require direct instruction and supervision is growing. It’s up to the supervisor to guide the worker into success. You will run out of people if you keep firing for self starting. They have literally had their hands held their entire life.
