How I Fixed the Wheel Gauge and Added a Working Front Coupler to a Bachmann N Scale 2-8-0 Locomotive
How hard is it to get the main drive wheels into the correct gauge on a model like this? What about a working coupler in front?
Bachmann's N scale 2-8-0 consolidation is a popular model that looks good and runs well. It fills an important niche, as real 2-8-0s were workhorses of the steam era and used by many railroads.
Dan's N scale Bachmann 2-8-0 consolidation locomotive is painted and detailed for his fictitious North Coast railroad.
The model already has LokSound DCC and sound installed, and a LokSound Power Pack capacitor to help the model over electrical gaps. Dan also reworked the front headlight and added a functional rear headlight.
The oil bunker for the tender is a freelanced design that’s meant to be reminiscent of some Santa Fe tenders.
It’s a nice looking smooth running locomotive, but there are two things about it that Dan wasn't happy with.
The first and biggest problem is that the drive wheels are slightly narrow in gauge. This doesn’t cause problems on some track, like Kato Unitrack.
Dan's N scale Siren Creek layout, however, has hand laid code 40 rail on PC board ties, and everything is done to strict NMRA standards. This track isn’t very forgiving with narrow wheel sets.
The second problem is the lack of a working front coupler. Dan is hoping to use this as the main standard gauge steam engine on the Siren Creek layout, and to make it useful for switching it needs to be able to couple on both ends.
In this video Dan shows how to fix the gauge of the drive wheels, and how to add a Micro-Trains coupler to the pilot.
If you have one of these and want it to be even more useful, be sure to check out this video!
