Thank you for this reveal. So someone wrote the answers, placed the paper on top of the sole in the prop brought in to hold the briefcase. You then stepped on the sole and therefore placed it in your shoe as you yelled for the audience to applaud Teller coming up - hiding the sound of the sole’s magnets clicking onto the shoe. Wow very tricky. The key is the helper who was off stage to load the answers onto the sole. No one expected an offstage helper - least of all Penn and Teller in this trick. Great job.

I don’t watch the videos where people reveal a trick from start to finish. (Which, thankfully, you didn’t do.) I’m 49 years old, an engineer and an intelligent person. I still like to see magic and wonder how it’s done, but I don’t want to KNOW how it’s done. I have spent my life engineering and reverse-engineering all sorts of devices and processes. Magic is the last thing that I have left that leaves me with the same amazement and wonder that I had when I was young. However, the gag that you use on hecklers is brilliant and creative. I’m glad that you showed that one. I really laughed when I saw that! Thanks for the magic and wonder you provide!.:-)

Truly a lesson in crafting the perfect magic trick, using all the tools at the disposal of the illusionist. The magnetic sole is a unique and brilliant innovation that produces a seemingly normal shoe that Jonathan can hold in his hand. Plus, changing the focus from the suitcase to the shoe was an excellent use of misdirection, causing Penn & Teller to overlook the simple possibility that the written answer was transported on stage with the table. On both counts you truly fooled them on the night, as part of an entertaining performance full of humour and surprises. Thanks for posting the solution after all these years, and for your graciousness in answering people's questions along the way. I'm interested to know if Penn & Teller have now learned the solution - I'm guessing they'd be doubly impressed.
@morpheas768

I dont know why you predicted that this would be disappointing. I wasnt disappointed in the slightest. In fact, I was actually more impressed by the revelation than when you did the actual trick on stage. The brilliance is in its simplicity, and the fact that you thought of it and executed it well, should make you damn proud. Btw, all tricks are simple at their core. It all starts from a simple idea, a key, if you will. Even the most seemingly complex tricks are fundamentally simple. And also, simple or not, Penn & Teller didnt figure it out on the show, so thats what actually matters. Well done, you've impressed a whole bunch of people, not just me :)

Saw the performance of the trick first time TODAY (since they don´t broadcast this great show in Germany :( ... but so I didn´t have to wait 6 years for the solution, watched it right after watching the trick^^). Great trick, would have never guessed how you did it! And thank you for also revealing the solution! But I´m a little disappointed that you can´t really see how it´s done on TV just because of the editing. And I really would have liked to see Penn & Teller play rock paper scissors in full length^^

Mine was the comment suggesting a small person with nice handwriting secreted in the plinth on the original video. I should very much like to be selected at random to win one of the DVDs. Let's let fate decide.

I like the little things, like having to make the adjustment to have the crowd cheer to hide the "click" sound of the magnets.

I think your 1st attempt and being chastise by Penn was your motivation for not getting even as much as it was respect for you not only as a magician but a person. I think sometimes in life we need things like this to awaken our creative juices. We never know where inspiration might come from so we should always be ready to be inspired. Great vid and thanks for sharing!

Nice, very clever. I wonder if given say 3 chances, would Penn & Teller have figured it out?

Alex hobbs Teller genuinely said he could have guessed all night. He had another guess backstage... lol

Richard Bellars haha, i take it they know how it is done now? I was thinking this is a trick that you could only perform with a stage, but im sure there is a way of adapting it to more of a street scene?
@RichardBellars

Alex hobbs I wrote it for stage but street could be easy too. Someone writing and placing the sole just out of sight behind a bin etc. Could work..

TBH i think alot of people could have guessed all night, everyone is so acustomed to thinking it goes down in the shoe, i dont think many could have guessed it, honestly its a stoke of brilliance where you think out of the box... in the way this is executed it kind of reminds me of the chris angel levitation(which i asume you are familiar with), i dont think many would have guessed that either.. i have loved and studied magic for 30 years now, but i would never have guessed magnetic sole :p

just watched your winning video and seeing this video. very wise line you said here that all the years practice and doing magic for years and all you had to do is one move to step on the block - made a big difference. I liked your thinking and approach.

He does a double lift to swap the chosen card for a gimmicked one. Then swaps it back after to hand the original card back.

I know that. I just don't get how the hole appears and vanishes. Might just be the gimmick though.

Someone off stage wrote it down and put the paper in the sole in the little table

Mark Proffitt how’d they do that tho without anyone seeing them? They had to bring it out after the games right? So they could write all the answers down. How’d they get the piece of paper in the sole in the table without anyone seeing?

@@johnnyblack3676 Did you watch the video? He explains a table was brought on stage to support the briefcase. The sole of the shoe + prediction loaded inside the table leg. He just stepped on it while Teller brought the briefcase up to a round of applause, disguising the click of magnets. Generous TV editing cut out the bit where the table was brought on stage.

Richard.. I admire your modesty and ingenuity. You thoroughly thought through every conventional method and left them open as sucker gags. When I watched the performance I suspected the same method as Pen & Teller did. Congrats! ..(but you should have sold your secret!.. it's great!).
