Have you tried already shadowing or extensive memorization to improve in your language? Thank you very much for watching! :) PS: Make sure to record yourself, while repeating the memorized content in order to spot errors. I for example have already seen that I say "iedereen" the wrong way. I will correct it going forward.

Yes I also like shadowing :) especially in the beginning I do it quite often. But it's always useful in my opinion.

I love reading and listening to texts in Dutch repeatedly to improve my comprehension. I can’t believe how effective this approach is. I haven’t tried repeatedly producing sentences in Dutch yet though, at least not consistently or systematically, but I should probably add this to my daily routine soon. Thanks for sharing this video!

Thanks for this video, it really clarifies how to go about shadowing! I realize I already do a version of this when I'm doing Drops: I had the hardest time learning vocabulary with flashcards until I started repeating the words aloud after the computer. The difference in retention is like night and day. I can see how shadowing could be effective in learning longer or more complicated speech. I wonder if this might be useful with idioms or common set phrases, like instead of memorizing paragraphs from random audio clips, one could do it with lists of common phrases (although it might be difficult to acquire natural audio for that). Anyway, thanks again for the video, it's got me thinking of ways I can implement this in my own language learning!

You're welcome Elizabeth. Exactly! That's what I'm also doing with drops :). It changes a lot! The physicality of creating the sounds by yourself and not just repeating in your head is definitely worth it. I think when you shadow, whole phrases or dialogues, it helps a lot with your intonation and rhythm of the language. When I did some English shadowing, I could really see the difference in my videos… I automatically adapted some pattern in how I speak. I didn't expect that to happen that quickly. One tip from my side. Chose content that you find interesting and that gets you into a good mood. The more you can identify with it, the better it will stick. Basically the same as for consuming comprehensible input.

I'm a native English speaker who learnt 7 languages to either B2 / C1. And I would say I never used this method, and I don't think I could even do it for A1 content. I would rather listen and absorb for months and months before I talk. However, I do have a slight accent in all languages except my native one even though I speak them all quite advanced or fluently. So perhaps this works, but I don't have the discipline to do it. What I did find though, I can speak French well. I used LingQ and I flew through the 60 mini stories for Italian without issues. Had a high retention rate and it was just easy even without studying the language before. However, I'm struggling with German and just to remember so called "basic" words like Geburtstagsfeier takes a HUGE amount of effort. My speed is super slow for German and I can't remember jack all. I'm struggling and it has got to be much harder than RUSSIAN and CANTONESE which I know both well. Maybe I need to do this method that you are showing, but I"m scared that I might ruin my potential accent and sound like those typical english speakers who speak every language like an "american".

Thank you very much for your detailed feedback! Wow, 7 languages that's really impressive! I'm also someone who really likes to read and to listen to content for months before I start speaking. This is also what I have been doing here, but now I'm also using shadowing and memorization techniques to activate that passive vocabulary. An accent isn't anything bad, it just depends on what our goal is. If we really want to have no accent we would also have to learn by using the IPA, before we even start shadowing, in order to know how to make the sounds. Then we can even shadow with the IPA. I memorized for example in French a whole song without knowing what it was about, just by using the IPA. It has been a ton of work, but I have learned a lot. It has been part of the mimicmethod by Idahosa Ness. It has been a ton of work, but definitely worth it. And the nice thing is also that the more sounds you learn of the IPA the easier it gets to learn new languages, since you already know how to make them and there is always some overlap. Sure the more differences there are between the languages the harder it gets. I fully agree! And German is for sure not easy, with all those long and difficult to pronounce words. Wow, so German is harder than Russian and Cantonese for you? That's fascinating! I can't wait to learn a language that's fundamentally different from mine. Keep going! I'm sure you will get to the level of German that you aspire! :-)

I’m curious how effective you’ve found this? Does it help your comprehension, or make your speech more free when speaking freely to a native? Looks like an interesting method. Do you know of anyone else other than you and the language lords guy who has tried anything similar?

Thank you very much for your comment :). It's actually hard to keep up, because it requires a lot of mental effort. It definitely activates otherwise passive vocabulary and I've already had the experience that phrases I have learned this way, I could use effortless in my own language production, like when writing for example. Especially for phrases that you wouldn't use otherwise, because they are very language specific. Nope I haven't seen anyone else doing that to be honest. I can definitely recommend giving it a try, but only if you got the time and it doesn't demotivate you. It can be easier to just go to italki and have a real conversation, I have to admit…
