Today we are getting a big portion of the insulation done on my self built shop. We have done the majority of the work ourselves (everything but the concrete finishing). I originally intended on letting the pros do some spray foam insulation, but after some cost increases and the quotes I was getting back I just couldn't justify the expense. With the spray foam and by the time I paint the exposed spray foam I would be about $13,000 into the insulation. With the additional wood, the many rolls of insulation and the vapor barrier I will be about $3500 in materials. Not exactly a totally fair comparison since I will be doing all the work myself and the spray foam was with their labor included. But there isn't a great do it yourself option for spray foam as the equipment rig definitely makes it cost prohibitive. So by no means am I saying the price was out of line, just that I had the ability and time to go a different route where I could offset the cost with my labor instead.
The building is a 30'x48' with 16' walls. R13 fiberglass insulation with kraft facing. 16" wide on the walls and 24" wide on the roof. All of it will then be covered with a double bubble radiant barrier for additional insulation value along with being the vapor barrier.
I also installed polystyrene foam underneath the 7" concrete slab.
