Thanks again, great video. The w201 manual says to use a sealing compound (not sure which) in the clamping gap to prevent corrosion. I can imagine that a tiny spot is left open or is created during ball joint rotation, that allows for moisture to collect inside on the pin. If in wet/salty conditions I would use other, more trusted means, of preventing rust, which still don't attack the ball joint boot.

If you are doing a lot of mechanical work that multi hex socket would last about a month before it would start to slip.single hex impact sockets are the go, if you are going to use your good sockets use a breaker bar to loosen the bolts first, you can get uni joints made for rattle guns. Nice spring compressor where do you get that type?

A good tip is if you have any cheap wire clothes hangers cut them to size and use them for hanging the brake calipers up on the suspension spring ( unless you're taking the spring off ) or the lip of the wing .

Just replaced my springs in my 1993 320CE as one was bent for some reason. Did the shock bump stops and dust covers too. Replaced the springs with R129 springs I sourced after finding others have done it…they work well. Went to change the lower ball joints and they’re the welded in type. I was told in the past they went to non replaceable ball joints in 1994…obviously not. Searching for new control arms and found there’s 2 types…standard and heavy duty. I heard years ago all Australian delivered 320CE are heavy duty sportline chassis…the rear bushes on them are wider. Rang my friendly Mercedes Benz dealer and asked if they could check my VIN to see if I have heavy duty control arm…they won’t tell me. On a Google search I can’t see any new ones for sale here in Australia…MB can supply me with the correct ones for over $1000 each. I see them in the USA for around $200 each…plus a fortune to ship them here. Can’t order them until I find out if my car has definitely heavy duty chassis. Put it back together so I can drive it…drive belt tensioner broke today trying to replace the fan belt…centre bush just goes around and won’t tension…I think it was seized and keeping tension until I released the centre bolt pressure. Bought the coupe in 2010 and nothing has gone wrong…until now. Oh yeah the air con stopped working a month ago…specialist says it has plenty of gas…compressor clutch won’t activate…that’s my next project.

3 litre and 3.2 litre m104 1000% has non replaceable balljoint front lower control arms. The only variable is weather it has sportline option or standard. You’d have the option code for it (can’t remember what it is) usually accompanied by all the badging, the gear knob and smaller sportline steering wheel (i have one in Red currently) The non replacemennt balljoint front lower arms go hand in hand with the quad piston brake calipers. The “povo” version front arms with replacemable balljoints do not fit the bigger brakes without rubbing. And yep shipping is a bitch, go with FCP over pelican parts when ever they have the parts you need - they will have the lower control arms thats where i bought mine. Be aware of cheap crap china ones - they have balljoints that will fail in short order and write your car off and possibly kill you or others.

Sportline wasn’t the right word…the information I was told was all Australian delivery 320CE were fitted with heavy duty suspension. The USA supplier I’m looking at has TRW control arm in standard and heavy duty…just wish my MB dealer could have told me the correct part number to confirm it.
@MMWA-DAVE

@@lancejohnston3688 not aware of “heavy duty” have never seen that in the parts catalog. I have TRW on red, I suspect lemforder is better. They are already squeaking after very little use though it’s probably because its lowered.

@@MMWA-DAVE I lowered mine in 2012…just raised it again as I got sick of backing off on bumpy roads because the suspension was bottoming out and repairing my front bumper/spoiler from hitting parking stops. American parts suppliers use a number of terms for the control arms…some say with or without heavy duty or sports suspension or sports chassis. Apparently the sport chassis version has wider rear bushes on the control arm. If necessary I’ll pull a control arm to find the part number…had a look yesterday but can’t see one…must be stamped on the other side. My control arms have the hard sealant in the split steering knuckle joint…it’s obviously done at the factory to try and cope with salted roads. Got a friend in the Netherlands with a 300CE full of rust…he visited me in 2013 and couldn’t believe how rust free our cars are.

@@lancejohnston3688 i’m considering raising my car again too. It is a can of worms lowering a car, there are so many negative side effects involved and i’m not a fan of them. I kept the original springs for just such an occasion. I will need to buy or find thinner spring pads as i installed the thickest 4 notch pads with the lowering springs as they were absolutely ridiculous when first installed. Naturally I have lost the originals.

I wouldn’t mind doing this when reassembling but with no engine in the bay it’s not going to work as theres not enough weight for them to compress. I’ll have to come up with some other solution so as to not scratch my new springs when installing, i really don’t like the chinese spring compressors, the disks are too thick.

This is a 24 valve 6 cylinder, they have the largest front brakes of the 6 cylinders with 4 piston calipers hence needing the non rebuildable balljoint lower control arms. I can't remember the diameter of the disks off the top of my head, I would have to measure them.

TOONACEDRELA pretty happy with it, it was the most powerful 1/2” drive unit available at the time I bought it, not sure if still is. My only complaint is how big it is and how heavy it is. For the smaller fasteners it’s definitely overkill and a smaller unit would certainly do the job at 1/4 the weight and size. I will have to get one of those too. This one just effortlessly gets bolts and nuts undone that i struggle to budge at all with a hand ratchet.
