Greeting from Humboldt County California. Excellent turning. Glad you had the mask as redwood is a fine dust. Hauled thousands of board feet back in my log truck driving days in the 70’s. Some of the lightest loads but it could get extremely heavy, 114,000# was the biggest I weighed. And that was 2-20 ft.long butt cuts. Always time well spent watching your channel.

Looked like an ambitious project. Quite beautiful wood and design; your gift was quite exquisite, too. Can you describe what redwood smells like? Scent is such a big part of an experience; somehow, I think that it would be more subtle than pine or cedar? No, I’m not weird, just like to incorporate as many of my senses as I can. 😊

Thanks very much! I wanted to maximize the wood in that one board so I took it as far as I could 😊. I have a bad sense of smell, but I just brought a bad of these fresh shavings to my wife for her opinion, and she says it smells very pleasant, like fresh honey. Great question!

There was 23 of us in the CORPS back then. Six of us on our first enlistment were needed because of VIET NAM. The other seventeen were career oriented. We spent almost two years in school with the last year at IBM in civilian school. After that for me it was three months at 29 palms and then 19 months in VIETNAM. The CORPS had four installations in country with some crossover with comms battalions. If you would like to hear more let me know how to private message you. As an old computer tech I claim ignorance these days. I get in less trouble that way. JERRY@@RHumphrey Cancel Reply

Such an amazingly beautiful piece. I can't imagine the amount of hours it took you to create such a masterpiece from a single piece of redwood. Every joint has a bit of a reddish highlight as if you'd stained the pieces before gluing them together. Maybe that's just the nature of the redwood. But it makes for an amazing design accent through and through. This truly some masterful work. You outdid yourself. Just beautiful!
@RHumphrey

Thank you very much! It did eat up some time, but it was the type of time that I absorbed into and didn't even notice while the hours passed. Good stuff. As for the red between each segment, I was very happy to see it happen. The glue picked up just enough of the powdery redwood dust to give that highlight. Happy accident! Thanks again!

I really enjoy your videos. Your beautiful turnings insoire me to try some of the magnificent bowls and somehave been nice enough to give as gifts to friends. As of late, I have been working with my grandson to provide some instruction and what limited knowledge I learned and am teaching him that long sleves, watches, bracelets, and rings are not to be worn when working with tools such as the lathe, but he sees that you wear these items and I am asked about them. I was wondering if you could say a few words to the newer turners out there about this?
@RHumphrey
9 ай бұрын
Thank you very much, I appreciate that! Regarding the ring and watch/bracelets, and even long sleeves, I can't argue with your safety concerns. I'll say that we are all responsible for our own safety and protective measures, though, and you should apply whatever levels you feel necessary. I say this with respect. It is very common for turners to wear gloves and other items, but to be wary at the same time of hand and tool placement.

That is gorgeous! I put segmented rims on my bowls so I could feel your pain during glue-up. That is lots of work but the result is well worth it. One nit: the grain on the base does not match the rest of the piece and looks out of place to my eye. Forgive my criticism. You've produced a wonderful and shapely vessel. It would certainly be a highlight piece of my short turning experience. I'll check out your dust mask. My rubber mask is effective but sometimes gets hot and sweaty from the moisture in my breath.

Thanks very much! When I add rings while the base is mounted on the lathe, it's just by feel with fingertips. For a C shaped bowl, you can see how it's done in this video when I add the second group of rings. it's just undercutting, whether with a segmented piece or a single chunk. I've made quite a few of them because it's a bowl shape I favor. Hope that helps.
