Frustration was introduced in Gen II not Gen IV. It was even a TM from Gens II - VII. Frustration would work really well for the lore of this pokemon, but it would be a bit too strong for early game because if you get it at the minimum friendship value of 35, it's base power would be 88. That being said, it could work in Emerald because the first gym resists normal.

I'm trying to fix this for over a week now, and its close to impossible to make everything coherent even just one gen, because there is no Canon consistency intended whatsoever. While I agree with the reasoning for the Dark type addition, I feel it would have been equally fitting to make Banette Ghost/Normal. It is an entirely average every day object (a doll) that has been possessed. Not to mention on the gameplay front this leaves it with exactly one weakness in all generations. The dark type, perhaps a fitting representation of it's childish malice. It belives it has experienced the worst there is in the world, so when a force darker then it's hate assaults it... it essentially falls apart. Also gaining a second physical stab type would mean the world to it; especially since Ghost/Normal is perfect neutral coverage. It would also very fittingly make Frustration/Return it's strongest stab option. Representing that for it to reach it's full potential it must either delve to the deepest parts of it's hatered, or heal it's soul with a new friend.

i like the idea of Shuppet being a early game trade, and the inclusion of Revenge help a lot. i'm more on the boat of giving the Normal/Ghost type instead of Ghost/Dark, it's just a doll at the end of the day and poor Sableye needs to keep his job. it would also make Phoebe a little harder. her starttegy makes more sense as part the endurance test aspect of the league, but today averyone preserves all ether's just for the league, eliminating any worry she may present.

@MaxBurnHeart
11 ай бұрын
Truee, Patrat/Watchog is an ideal topic. First of all, there's literally zero reason to use Patrat when Lillipup has exactly the same availability, but it's straight-up better. What's the point of Patrat, anyway? No, I'm serious- what is even the point? Lillipup would be perfectly fine as the only pure normal first route pokemon. Seems like we really needed an early game rodent in a brand-new region that was supposed to be a soft reboot. At least Zigzagoon and Poochyena have different typing and serve different purposes. Heck, Watchog is remembered only because of Lenora. Is that why Patrat is not available in any pokemon game on switch? Not counting Unova, the only other region and THE last time we could catch it was in Kalos. As a Watchog in route 15, which is like after the 5th badge. Long after it could have any use. Just... why. If I could pick any rodent pokemon that needs help- it's easily the Patrat line.

Illuminate ability, hypnosis, super fang, mean look for trapping roaming legendaries... you know... the mechanic that (besides bdsp) never came back after bw1 (not even bw2)... doesn't get false swipe... Jokes aside yeah its not even the best mon for catching other mons but it still does kinda do alright in that role, I've seen it get used by shiny hunters too. Even despite that, it is a shame that its right next to Lillipup. It still does kinda differentiate itself since it gets some good status / support moves, even gets baton pass. So Stoutland is the standard pick for dealing damage, and Watchog is the weird status and support alternative. Although I could still see the need for a rework that makes it better in that role.
@MaxBurnHeart
11 ай бұрын
@@turtier Oh yeah, forgot about its utility as a catcher pokemon. That's a useful niche, although people don't care about it in a regular playthrough. Still, yeah- it needs a rework. A big one. It's nice that it has a lot of status and support moves, but that alone is not enough. The difference between Patrat and Lillipup should be far more visible. As rjante2236 said, it's just better to use Take Down on Herdier. It cannot compete with the Lillipup line, as Stoutland is designed to be good even in the late game (I heard the solo Lillipup line run is the current best strategy for BW speedruns, which should tell a lot), while Watchog is supposed to be good until like early midgame. But what can one do? Buff stats? Add new typing? Maybe a new ability? Yeah, the ability would be a nice start, as its two basic abilities are doing basically the same thing, except the other helps with catching gimmicks and could annoy casual players. I don't see any other way to change, as my other solutions would change Watchog way too much. I guess it would be best to go with a solution similar to the Skitty line.

Patrat’s above average by early game normal standards if only by the virtue of return being gotten after the first gym. It’s no ratticate or lilipup but anything with an over 100 bp stab before gym 2 is fine. Also baton pass gives it actual significant usability late against the ghost elite 4 the psychic elite 4 everyone’s favorite fictional parent grimsley assuming you’ve specifically gotten evd for bulk and even enabling sweeps vs Cynthia quite easily ( if anything it’s better for post game by virtue of this alone then lilipup but lilpup’s still better when exploring the world normally on the main story). You’d be happy to have any normal type that early with the return tm that early in a nuzlocke. Patrat’s honestly better then the starters in black white 2 except arguably tepig

I aggree with others that Ghost/Normal would have been more interesting, but the Dark type definitely mattered here. I hope you get around to fix Magcargo, nothing about that pokemon makes sense. Defense is its highest stat by far yet the pokedex states that its shell would crumble just by touching it. Which is ironic because said shell, by giving it the Rock type, actually makes it worse defensively. And let's not talk about how a Pokemon that evaporates rain on contact is 4x weak to Water. I wish more Pokemon had a bigger variety of type coverage via level-up moves, it's always exciting to get an out-there move that isn't just Normal or one of the Pokemon's types. Sudowoodo, for example, can learn Wood Hammer, Hammer Arm, and Sucker Punch (albeit you might need heart scales, depending). All of them have a fun logic to them that makes sense with the Pokemon's lore, and offers some variety to its moveset instead of just being Rock and Normal moves. So giving Revenge to Banette makes perfect sense, I like it a lot.

Banette really isn’t bad in gen 3, when considering its use in-game. You severely underrate its TM movepool; Will-O-Wisp is amazing on anything, and Thunderbolt and Psychic are fine with a base Special Attack of 83. There are better options, yes, but there are also MUCH worse ones. I do like these changes though, even if I think Ghost/Dark steps on Sableye’s toes. Revenge is a sick option for it, and Synchronize is nifty. I would personally add Glare in the mid-20s to enable it to outspeed things.

Good changes overall for Shuppet/Banette. I really like when ROM Hacks get creative with this Pokémon, as I feel it is one of the Ghosts more deserving of a secondary typing. I enjoy Ghost/Dark, it makes sense thematically and fits especially well on Mega Banette's design, with all the dark energy seeping through the doll's costures. I just dislike that another Pokémon on the generation already sjares this type with it (Sableye). Another option I really really enjoy is Ghost/Normal, which reinforces the feeling of this being a normal doll turned into an evil possessed being. It fits more thematically then design-wise, but it's an extremely flavourful change for this Pokémon. Anyway, there's a huge room for improvement with Banette. So, I'm really glad to see this video and the changes you did to it paying off! I'm once again gonna put my two cents into HGSS Natu being one of the Pokémon we can look into next. It has an abismal learnset and movepool (the first Psychic type damaging move it gets is like at level 40 or something...) and I think it's more than deserving of earlier availability (by bringing the grass patches in the Ruins of Alph to an earlier section, around Falkner) and a moveset overview 💪

PS: the decision to change the in-game trade was not only in-character, but also a far, far cry in uniqueness and utility from its previous iteration (which I think was a Makuhita... or a Seedot). I also want to add that the decision of including Revenge in the learnset surprised me at first (it feels like such a typical Fighting-type Pokémon exclusive move), but then I looked into the list of Pokémon that get Revenge and there's really weird crap there like Qwilfish and Stunfisk, therefore, I have no qualms about it.

Personally I would've made Banette and Shuppet ghost/normal even though it makes slightly less sense thematically but you could argue it could be normal type because it's made of cloth. Normal allows Banette to use both it's STAB's physically and is still a great defensive typing. Another change I would've made is giving it intimidate as well because it also fits thematically and allows Banette to switch in on even more physical hits. The final change I would make along with yours is putting some of its speed into Hp, Defence and Special Defense (More Defense and Hp) along with raising its BST slightly because giving it more than 20 more BST spread overall wouldn't really help anyway. (I do get your reasoning for not doing changing BST though)

personally I'd put the trade in Slateport or Mauville, still possible before Brawly if you're cheeky. Still early enough to be useful, would still allow Ruby players to get a Ghost type other than shedinja before Mt. Pyre, but would be healthily deep in the game to not spur a ghost on the player when almost every enemy is still using Normal moves That last part is something that's important to consider when distributing Pokemon; rock, steel and ghost types are extremely powerful early game because most pokemon start with normal or sometimes poison moves, which these three types all resist.

It's been a while since the last video! Honestly, not a bad idea. Giving Banette a second type is the only way to differentiate it from other ghosts. But I don't like giving it a dark type, as ghost/dark completely invalidates any usefulness of Sableye. After all, why would you catch Sableye if Shuppet does the same things, and Banette does them better? No, I'd rather give Banette ghost/normal type, to give another meaning for that abandoned doll part. It differentiates it from Sableye, and gives it another very cool niche that we wouldn't have until Hisuian Zoroark's introduction. A ghost type that can't be hit by other ghosts, gets STAB from return/frustration (btw, frustration was a thing since gen 2). Only upsides to this. I like learnset suggestions, though. Revenge is an amazing fit, I don't know how it doesn't learn it even in gen 9.

C'mon hahhah I'm pretty sure they didn't give it the move because then it would have had the potential to overshadow Gengar as a spin blocker with some settup like an agility boost pass and/or enough bulk given that the rest of ghost types until gen 4 couldn't leverage their Ghost STAB due to the type being always physical and their low base attack stat, which is one of the best for gen 3 if paired up with Fighting coverage that also happens to be physical (Banette has base 113 attack stat and even a respectable 83 Sp. attack stat to put to use). I've been using Banette in gen 3 lately and here's the list of pokemon it either checks decently or completely blanks: it SOLOES Tyranitar and Blissey with just some chip damage and Hp Fighting + Taunt, even Snorlax at times; it has Insomnia, so Breloom is just useless against it; it cannot be exploded/self-destructed upon thanks to being a Ghost type, let alone Rapid Spinned, so Starmie and Calydol are just breakfast for it especially since it threatens an OHKO to the former and a 2HKO on the latter without risking being taken out. Oh and forget about Forretress doing anything substantial other than laying spikes than can easily be removed later in the game; Heracross still has a chance thanks to Guts but it doesn't take Shadow Balls all that well without lefties and the burn effect can still be good later in the game after some chip damage; Skarmory is absolutely USELESS against Taunt Banette, even more so if it runs Will-o-Wisp too. These are the most important niches I've been able to collect from using Banette but there certainly can be more to find. If it just had Pain Split though, it could neutralize most physical attackers like Metagross, which still poses a threat even after a burn if they're CB and usually can still 2HKO Banette if it's not too defensive, or any other CB user like Mence or Dugtrio. Funnily enough it got Pain Split the generation after it debuted, in which it was already outclassed by Gengar, the Rotom appliances, and even Spiritomb :'( Still, one of my favs to use in gen 3

I really enjoy your videos and you got plenty of great ideas !! Sadly, for once i have to disagree: being a Ghost/Dark type is very strong and kinda legit yeah, but that was THE thing of Sableye, the main thing that define itself (for me). Upgrading and giving justice to a pokemon is good, but taking the place of another one isn't :/ (but all the other things like Revenge and stuffs were very good, congrats)

Major nitpick, but I can see Knock Off being used by Pokemon without hands as, in Shuppet's case, them ramming their body against the opponent and knocking off their item.. Excellent video though. Love the trade idea!

Might be an easy one, but Deino? Really, the only changes one needs to make are to the actually unfair level requirement in Gen 5, since everything else is fantastic. It is a Psuedo, after all. My idea? You only need to get Deino to Level 42 for Zweilous, and Level 54 for Hydreigon. Level 54 Hydreigon and Ghetsis speak for themselves, but the Level 42 for Zweilous lets you only have to Level Deino up once or twice to trigger its evolution, since you encounter it in Victory Road at Levels 40-41. Have to hit the ground running after all, especially since this is Victory Road.

I love the Dark typing, but I think a really cool alternative would have been Ghost/Normal. You could make the argument for Normal that since dolls are a pretty "normal" toy for children to play with and is essential just a regular object with no special properties. That, and the Shuppwt line could ignore the special atk stat in a gen 3 playthrough because of dark being special, for some reason.

This is maybe a little too trauma-dumpy, but as a lesbian who was rejected when I came out to my mom, I absolutely loved the little story you told with Banny finding a family she belongs in. I even got a little emotional at the end, it was so sweet 🥺

There is one thing I would have really loved and that would be Banette’s final level up move (say in the 60s) would be Return. This is solely for story purposes, because no matter if you traded for it or caught one in the wild, you still have to put in a good amount of time to hit that point. By then I fully see Banette mellowing a bit, still hateful but slowly finding a new happiness. It may not have any practical use in gameplay but you cannot deny it is cute in a way.

I've used a Banette in one of the later gens. it was... both refreshing and infuriating to use. Think it was in my Omega Ruby Nuzlocke where I caught myself a Shiny Grimer. Speaking of... think you could ever fix an Ekans (Arbok by extension) or the (Kantonian) Grimer line? Poison happens to be my favorite type, yet every generation when I try to resolve myself to use one, I just ditch it because most Poison Types are either terrible stat-wise or the moves they can learn are all Special-based when the Pokémon in questing is Physical-based. Never used one effectively since Gen 6. Lookin' at you Beedrill. And that's only because it's one of a few that can use some devastating Poison moves and Mega Evolve.

The fun thing with it being broken for Brawley, is that Saybley can do the same thing, and Shedinja if you don't use level caps. Skitty is rare enough of a pokemon that it wouldn't imbalance nuzzloke runs too harshly compared to the near garneted Wurmple.

I'm surprised you didn't give Shuppet Lick, since one of its idle animations has it stick out its tongue. I really really love that you made it part Dark type too. And a move I would have also given it in later generations is Play Rough, because WHY does it learn Dazzling Gleam but not Play Rough??

@@rjante2236 Yes, Flare Blitz to hit grass type and Jump Kick for rock would already be an amazing improvement. Too bad Jump Kick is a deleted move nowadays. And better STAB than Wild Charge would be amazing, but Volt Tackle is reserved for the Pichu line. Which is a huge shame, I would love to have a good physical electric move that is not a signature move or w/e. :/ I could also see Zebstrika learn High Horsepower and Stomping Tantrum. Maybe Close Combat and Play Rough too if we want to stretch it a bit. These moves alone would give Zebstrika so much more going on. Thankfully, it's already confirmed it's coming to Paldea in the second DLC. Maybe we'll see some improvements for Zebstrika. If not, well... at least tera could give some coverage...?

I don't agree with Banette being Ghost/Dark. 1. I feel like Banette was shown to be a little too overpowered being able to sweep almost every fight. A player should be getting maximum use out of all the tools available to them, but Banette kind of stole almost all the spotlight. Pokémon are meant to have strengths and counters. Keeping it mono ghost would have given it something to exploit which would have given other Pokémon a fighting chance. 2. Your changes to make certain Pokémon stronger can negatively effect the viability of others. Such as the Dark Type Elite Four not being able to do anything to it despite otherwise being the perfect counter. The biggest victim of Banette's type change is Sabeleye. Being the ONLY Pokémon in the entire game (prior to Spiritomb and Fairy type) to not have any weaknesses was a core part of Sabeleye's identity and partially made up for it's pathetic stats. Giving that same type combo to Banette (a Pokémon with much better stats) rips that away from him.

i think another forgotten pokémon in a similar position to Banette is Beheeyem. You get elgyem quite late into the game, it doesn't evolve till quite late and then is outclassed by most other psychic types available in gen V. Would great to see you cover it and improve its viability!!

It really is a shame that even by modern gen standards, its movepool has not improved nearly as much as other Pokemon who were also present in Gen 3, Scarlet and Violet gave it Swords Dance though which is at least something, I guess? Massive shame as Banette is one of my favourite Gen 3 Pokemon and it feels so neglected, so much so it wasn't even added into Sword and Shield.
