Sadly it's still nowhere near its competition of water attack spamming tododile. Sure this moveset helps greatly in actually finishing the game with it if you want to, but it would most likely still deter most players that don't have the patience to play this way, and even this playstyle doesn't work for every fight. That's why I think we can't help meganium without a stat change. Bayleaf maybe looks like it could make use of those lead blades but meganium has no features to justify an 82 base attack. For me a 98-60-90-88-112-82 would help it a lot, both as a slow set up and as a more regular attacker. If we only do move changes, I think adding extrasensory and barrier would both make sense and provide it with great coverage/set up options. Extrasensory is not too crazy as you can already get it early as it's one of Togepi's egg move, plus it makes sens with Meganium's theme of scents and delicate sensitive flower. Also aromatherapy should probably be available at an early level, that's the whole theme of this Pokémon. I could also get sunny day so it could utilise a sun set with growth, solar beam and synthesis. Also please, give this thing energy ball, it's not like it has too many moves already, energy ball feels like it belongs to it. Make bayleaf 80-72-63-50-80-60 and give it leaf blade so it's more physical.

Leech Seed fixing the Chikorita line's problems sounds about right. My favorite team member period (Grass type or otherwise) in the Johto games (mostly Gen2, but Gen4 also works) is Jumpluff, which trades Reflect for Leech Seed and way more speed. It's always an invaluable asset against any pokemon that can't twoshot it. Seeing that, it makes total sense that a bulkier pokemon without the Flying type induced 2x time weaknesses and neutralities would do incredibly well with Leech Seed. Also, side note - the Headbutt TM/tutor always ends up being really good on Jumpluff for me considering the extra flinch turns provide extra leech healing. Should work great for a leech seed Chikorita as well. This is a pretty great video. I like how there's a run to back up the changes too.

I love this concept. These smaller changes feels more in line with how Game Freak might actually improve an older Pokemon without adding a regional form. [Which I don't think of as an improvement - it's just making a different version whilst leaving the older one in the dust.] As someone who usually picks Chikorita and had it be my first starter ever, I am so glad to see it getting some love that doesn't tack on a Fairy-type. All the moves and changes you made are very fitting. I particularly love the addition of Earth Power, Dragon Pulse, and Ancient Power. These three types are always great in a Johto playthrough and as someone who doesn't really like Ground or Rock-types much, it would make Meganium far more valuable on my team. @silvapop9666
Жыл бұрын
I think the late game additions to Meganium are sorely needed, and are great. I do think this reworking of Chikorita doesn't address the main problem with it in gen 2: it has nothing for the first 2 gyms. In your playthrough, you just outdamage Pidgeotto and Scyther with moves like Tackle and Razor Leaf because there are no better options. In a challenge run setting, you'd never use Chikorita in either of these fights because it does nothing, and casually, it's frustrating to have your main guy have no tools before he gets one shot. To remedy this, I think you should give Chikorita/Bayleef Ancient Power way sooner, preferably when it's still a Chikorita, to hint at its more dino like design while giving it a way to handle Falkner, but at least before Bugsy. This encourages players to think about the risk/reward of using Chikorita. Should I stay in and hit with a super effective move, knowing I may be hit with one back? Plus, at base 60 with 5 pp, I'd say Ancient Power is a really balanced move to have early on: gatekeeping it to a later level limits it's usefulness as you experienced, and you never use it. Regardless, I really liked your video. Felt like it wrapped both sides of Poketubing that I really love, competitive and challenge runs. Great first video, can't wait for more

If this was applied to the original gen 2 games, it would be horrible, because rock-type and ground-type moves are all physical. It only makes sense once you apply it to later gens. Growth also only increases Sp. Attack in gen 2.

This reminds me of my childhood playthrough of HG, where my meganium beat reds charizard. Always nice to see it get some love maybe in future vids you can give pokemon new egg moves just to give them more options without cramming too much in the level up set, like if you gave chikorita dragon dance or wood hammer or something from breeding.

Loved the idea of making Chikorita more viable! It has been one of my favourite Pokémon ever since I got my first main series game: seeing its line get some much deserved appreciation puts a smile on my face. I also appreciate how you backed up the changes you proposed with a nicely commentated run, it made me enjoy the video much more than if you hadn't done so. I look forward to future uploads and I hope to see Chimecho and Maractus (two of my most beloved Pokémon) in future videos ❤

I really, really liked this video. Honestly, you did a damn good job fixing the Chikorita line, and making it viable in a play-through. The moveset you gave it is pretty good too. I also think adding some fairy type moves (after the typing was introduced to the franchise. Obviously, Ik it didn't exist in gen 4, but after it came to exist) would be good, cause idk, Meganium looks more like a gentle, forest fae creature than a dragon. Imagine this thing with dazzling gleam or moonblast. That would be better coverage against dragons than dragon pulse. Like, I don't mind meganium learning dragon moves, but the typing just doesn't fit it. In my opinion, Feraligatr is the most "dragon-looking" of the Johto trio. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that, Feraligatr, next to Charizard and Sceptile, form the trio of starters (one of each elemental type) that are like, "half dragons". They're all lizard lookin. Reptilian, which is a dragon characteristic. All 3 of them have similar body shapes, and all 3 of them can learn dragon moves. That's why I'm convinced that, had the Johto starters received megas, Fer woulda definitely been a dragon, to complete this trio with Sceptile and Charizard. Anyways, the video was really good, and I'd really like it if you did this with other underrated, weak mon, to try and fix them, and make them more usable. Think you could fix Seel and Dewgong? Or the Pidgey line? Or Hoppip? There's so many options 😅. Anyways, you got a new subscriber, looking forward for more content!

Wow thank you!! Never really thought about that for feraligatr. But I guess it makes sense. He could have a few different dual types honestly - maybe even dark or ice, all of which would be pretty fun. And thanks for the suggestions. Dewgong is one I’ve considered but honestly I think the only thing holding it back is it’s base stats. The fact that it gets stab ice makes it pretty useful for dealing with dragon types, especially in HGSS where you can just slap the choice scarf on it if u need the speed. I’d definitely say he’s one of the most underrated mons out there!

I'm pretty confident in saying that the Chikorita line was never intended to be an offensive mon, but rather fulfil the more niche role of Cleric that other JRPGs have. The problem of course, is that Pokemon is really just too easy of a series to justify needing this. There is never a situation where the solution to a problem isn't just "just kill it."

Bayleef and Meganium saved my ass during my HG playthrough. Tanking Whitney like a boss and manhandling Claire's Kingdra and Dragonair, as well as being pretty solid in Karen's fight. I'm glad you went through the effort to think out the changes and make sure the end result felt natural. Way too many "fixes" are just slapping on overpowered moves and abilities with no real rhyme or reason, and it gets kind of annoying. You also made me reevaluate the changes I made in the fangame I'm planning out. Pretty sure giving Delcatty an 80 point BST boost is a little overkill, even if the end result is still underwhelming.

Amazing video, I agree with all of your suggestions, but I do personally think that in a hardcore nuzlocke chikorita is actually a viable starter. Feraligatr has to compete with so many water types (mainly Gyarados) that it's hard to justify it. Typhlosion has nothing special and in my opinion is outclassed by Growlithe/Vulpix (version exclusive). Chikorita is not the best pokemon but it is easily one of the best grass types. It also can with a good enough meganium (or running sunny day to boost synthesis) solo clair with the assistance of swords dance. I wouldnt call meganium an amazing starter but Id argue in hgss it kind of competes with the other starters. I'm gsc though typhlosion is the best because the elemental punches would be special, making it have insane coverage.

Having Meganium alr have access to so many spore moves at a low level+access to learning both screen moves makes it such a support. If they gave it just more hp+offense it woulda been an easier time actually using it. The reason why I like Serperior so much cuz although it doesn’t get much offensive status moves, it does get many set ups+high spd/decent hp. And coil sure does help a LOT esp when you use light screen

Overall, I like the idea of this video. And I do personally respect the approach of no stat changes, no type change, and no ability change. Honestly, I feel like Chikorita as is works well enough in an in-game Nuzlocke-esque setting if the player uses it well enough. Some of the additions made here feel a bit on the "overtuned" side to make Meganium work better as a standalone pokemon than to be a general contributing mon. I'd say it's possible to lessen the scope of buffs while retaining to Chikorita's strengths. In my view, the less you buff a pokemon, the more you respect what it is than what it could be. And Meganium's set of learnable moves is fine enough that I think it would work just tweaking its learnset with moves it already learns rather than giving it newfound moves it has never been able to learn. Firstly, regarding Earth Power, this is a move with fairly limited distribution on Grass types. I'd say it's best to avoid giving Earth Power to Grass Pokemon that don't already have it unless there's a strong reason to do so. In this case, Chikorita-line has access to Earthquake as is and I think it's better to make use of the pokemon's existing options if they work. Similarly, while Calm Mind could possibly be argued to make more sense for the Chikorita-line than Swords Dance, I think it's better to respect the canon decision to give it Swords Dance over Calm Mind and lean on that if you really want to go the boosting approach. Swords Dance also gives more of a justification for using Natural Gift, which I don't mind taking out of the level-up learnset, but it would be nice for Chikorita to have more options to utilize the move. Natural Gift gives you a one time physical attack of a type of your choosing, which works nicely with Swords Dance to pick apart that one mon on the opponent's team that handles your other moves well. It's a good thing that Swords Dance is a Golden Rod Game Corner TM so Chikorita does have access to it. And naturally, Swords Dance gives more of an incentive to use the Earthquake that Meganium can learn. As for the choice to make Leech Seed a level-up move, I think it being an egg move makes perfect sense for Chikorita. Based on their design, it's not really a move I'd expect them to have natively, compared to say Bulbasaur. Granted, lacking leech seed by level-up puts Chikorita at a relative disadvantage compared to some other grass-type starters, and perhaps some of the ones that get Leech Seed by level-up don't fit *that* well to have it as a level-up move (like I could imagine Leech Seed being an egg move for Snivy as well). Even then, while Leech Seed is a move Chikorita certainly would love as a defensive grass type, I'd prefer to respect the egg move decision and lean on Chikorita's other traits which suffice to make it a worthwhile mon. As for Sleep Powder, I'd rather keep the existing distribution of Sleep Powder on grass types. Some grass types don't get it and have to make do with other options. Keeping Poison Powder is fine, but if you really want to go the sleep approach, there's the inferior Grass Whistle that Chikorita gets by egg move that could possibly be moved to a level-up move. I actually do like the Ancient Power level-up decision, though maybe it would be more fitting as a Meganium-only level-up move than also on Bayleef. I like the Seed Bomb and Nature Power lv1 move choices. Although Meganium can't get Nature Power in this gen, it does get it by level-up in later gens, and it certainly is a fun move with situational applications; glad to see that it came to use in this video. And yeah Seed Bomb isn't the most seamless level move for Meganium but given it can learn it, having the added move flexibility is nice, especially for Swords Dance synergy. Once again, I'd prefer not giving it Growth to better make use of the options it already has and to respect the nature of some grass types not having it. And though allowing it to learn Dragon Pulse isn't too much of a stretch, I think Meganium is fine without it. As a defensive pokemon, it doesn't need that wide of coverage scope. Another option is fitting Magic Coat into its moveset given it is a move it can get by tutor, and Magic Coat happens to be an amusing support move by virtue of robbing the opponent's move. In short, I think Meganium's a mon that doesn't need to be able to get any moves it doesn't get access to in canon (though moves it gets in later gens that exist in HGSS are fair game). A bit of learnset tweaking amidst its pool of existing moves is fine enough. Nonetheless, these changes are overall reasonable. I just think these changes go beyond what's necessary and would prefer to fine-tune what Meganium already has. Also, regarding the video showcase in the second half, it's a nice thing to include to see how things play in reality. But I think it also showcases the consequences of tuning Meganium a bit much: it ends up being very close to a Meganium solo that isn't too hard to pull off. Naturally, when giving Meganium Calm Mind, Earth Power, and Dragon Pulse, it becomes better at holding its own throughout the entire game, but I don't think that's what Meganium is supposed to be. Meganium's not a mon that's supposed to just beat most trainers, and if its buffs were toned down a bit, it would be nice to give more of a focus on other mons on the team that work alongside Meganium, rather than the rest of the team being there as occasional sack support for Meganium. With that being said, I loved this video and am interested to see more similar thought processes on other pokemon.

My only issue with these changes is that Meganium rarely ends up using Grass moves after it evolves. Earth Power + Calm Mind? And it already has Leech Seed + Reflect/Sleep Powder? Sure, it’s probably for the best Meganium doesn’t use damaging grass moves that much until the Kanto stretch, but at that point you have access to better moves too & are probably even considering replacing Meganium. Still, these ARE good changes in general, I just think it pushes Meganium too far away from its grass damaging moves.

Yeah that’s fair. I honestly don’t see a way around it in Johto tho. I’m sure if we were in hoenn we’d be giga draining thru the late game no problem. But everything after Pryce pretty much all resist grass: Jasmine, most of Clair, the Rival, most of Will, Koga and Lance. It’s just super tough to make a grass type viable in this game lol. I like how your changes are geared for a typical playthrough, rather then being competitive. I personally prefer pokemon that are fun to play with in the campaign, rather then great in PVP. When I was a kid one of my favorite things to do was use a Gameshark to change the starter pokemon to something else. So I'd do a playthrough where I started with, and my ace pokemon would be a, Magnemite, Rattata, Cubone, Houndour, Meowth. exc A lot of pokemon I tried didn't have the chops to make it sadly. - I am talking about G/S/C, so a lot of pokemon had fairly shallow move pools, or they really did not learn moves until they were fairly high level.

If you ask me, the only thing HGSS Chikorita needs is learning AncientPower as an early level-up move (say 12 or 13) instead of being locked to an egg move. No other changes, and it can be a HGSS-only change. If FRLG Charmander can get around the exact same problem Chikorita had in the early game with the only change being it learning Metal Claw early enough for Brock, and this being the only time ever Charmander can learn Metal Claw by level up, being able to deal super-effective damage to the first two gyms while still being tanky enough to not die as fast will help Chikorita by a lot.

I think the issue with having a starter as a support is that if you don’t immediately allow the player to have access to Pokémon that will evolve into reliable end game Pokémon it won’t feel like you’ll have a decent team until the mid game when you do get access to them. I for one despises my playthrough of HGSS with chikorita until I start to get a fire type and a water type that can do more damage

It's insane how shafted the Chikorita line is. Chuck's Poliwrath, Pryce's Dewgong and Piloswine, Will's Slowbro and Bruno's Onix - you literally cannot make a full team of 6 out of all the pokémon from gym leaders/elite four Grass STAB is super effective against unless you both have a Seel and Dewgong. And as you said, it's walled by the rival having Magneton and a Gengar, the poison types Team Rocket uses, and Morty.

Going one step further than the rules you set in place for this video, I would boost Meganium’s Special Attack stat to 90, give it the Fairy typing, and have it learn Moonblast. It was obvious that the Gen 2 starters were very lazily designed given they’re just the Gen 1 starters with swapped stats (except for Typhlosion which is literally a clone of Charizard’s stats). I think it’s fair for updating the stats of all the Gen 2 Pokémon for that reason. Also, earlier generations had unbalanced distribution of stats for the starters for some unknown reason, making fire type starters have more stats than grass type starters. Talk about unfair.

It also serves as a cool field move to attract wild Pokémon. And perhaps more moves that help it serve as a catching Pokémon... It has Sleep Powder already, maybe a special equivalent of False Swipe would be cool.. again playing into its less aggressive nature. My other idea would be to have a SOFTBOILED equivalent that is grass type but can be used as a field move outside of battle to heal teamates. Along with your changes, this would make it an invaluable party member.

I've seen a lot of ROM hacks making Meganium a Fairy type, and I always thought it made sense, but this video convinced me that Meganium should be Grass/Dragon. There are two Grass/Dragon lines (one if you don't count Alolan Exeggutor) and three Grass/Fairy lines. All of the other dinosaur Pokémon have dragon typing, and since Gen 6 introduced Fairy type, Meganium has not been able to learn a single fairy move, but has been able to learn both Dragon Tail and Outrage. Less Grass/Fairy Meganium's and more Grass/Dragon Meganium's!

It's mad how Chikorita a defensive Grass type, has only just been given Leech Seed as a level up move. But I really like it learning Ancient Power, and Earth Power. Especially Calm Mind, it suits the Pokemon very well. It goes to show that Meganium isn't fundamentally bad, it's largely been deprived power buffs and new moves that other Pokemon got throughout the generations. It is used to be considered the best Gen 2 starter for competitive.

I bet this wouldn't affect much, but buffing it's HP stat by 10 seems fair to me (and 5 base for the pre-evos). Fun fact, Meganium is the Johto starter with the lowest base stat total at 525. Feraligator has 530 and Typhlosion has 534. Aside from that, maybe give it Energy Ball, I don't remember if they have access to it, but even if Meganium isn't an attacking Pokémon, I think Energy Ball would still be a decent option that doesn't stray too far from it's archetype.
