Thank You for all Your explaining !! I dived into analyzing some of the great Rock/Pop Artists in Spotify and found out: Nearly everyone is overdoing integrated LUFS. The majority I think may be around -10 to -11. At least with their "Remastered"-versions of their albums. One Example for a totally destroyed work is the Imagine Dragons Album "Night Visions". The song "Radioactive" has a integrated LUFS of (around) - 6.6. It is totally destroyed. Further more I found that Spotify lets the user decide to TURN OFF the normalize option. When the option is switched off, the song will be played as uploaded (Spotify explaines this in the FAQs). When switched off then a "perfectly mixed" -14 LUFS Song will be way to quiet in comparizon with all the other "over compressed" songs. YES this is disastrous, I know, but artists in the end have kind of no choice and have to take part in the "Loudness War". The DEEZER APP for example has the normalize Option switched OFF in standard settings ... And the most people will not come to the idea to turn that option on, right? So let's all hope, that one day the Loudness War ends and dynamics in music will come back. Artists then will have to once more release a (again) Remasterd version of all their albums - this time in HQ dynamics ;-)
@LeonardoOrtegonMusic

When the Normalize option in Spotify is off, Spotify will only give you 3 options after that (loud, normal, and quiet). Loud option will max at -11 LUFS. In other words, Spotify will never play any song louder than -11 LUFS when the Normalize option is turned off

3:39 the -0.3dB true peak “standard” came about as a reasonably safe way of avoiding any inter-sample peaks... Because math :) I think it’s just become the thing everyone says as a default now, maybe in most cases without understanding why - so thanks for the excellent video and for setting the record straight on streaming levels - this advice was definitely CD era and doesn’t strictly apply to everything.

pushing the ceiling up does make your song sound clearer because ozone limiter at 0 db ceiling isn't doing anything to the song. when you pull it down it cuts out alot of clarity. to make up for that pulling down the threshold increases loudness and fullness. So yeah pushing the ceiling up DOES make your mix sound better, thats the only reason you brought it up because it does make it sound better otherwise you wouldn't of thought to talk about it.

Good video! I found it interesting to hear the info on Spotify requirements as I would have just mastered like I normally would for CD. By the way, the reason that people say the peak limit should be -0.3 dB is because that is the best level for CD mastering. It gives you a safe level to ensure that there are no "overs" (inter-sample peaks over 0 dBFS) that your limiter doesn't catch, so there is no distortion when the DAW file is converted to a WAV. During the height of the Loudness Wars (mid-2000s), people changed that to -0.1 dB because they wanted the level as hot as possible. The reason for -0.1 dB is exactly because of your example in the video, where you set the limiter to a True Peak value of -1 dB and the meter was still reading it as -0.9 dB, i.e. -0.1 dB different! So, once again, thanks for the info on Spotify. It's interesting that streaming services do extra conversion of files and I will be adhering to their standards when using those platforms. Cheers!

what about KZitem loudness limit ? in 2019 I searched on internet and i couldn't find ...
@LmocinemodSD
5 жыл бұрын
I've heard tell (though have not been able to confirm) that KZitem normalizes to about -13 LUFS. You can see what normalization KZitem's done to a video by right-clicking on it and clicking "Stats for Nerds." The "Volume / Normalized" line shows the value of the volume slider vs. the actual volume the video is being played at, as well as the overall loudness of the audio. Aim for a "content loudness" of 0 dB.
@thedevilsadvocate5210

Is it still true that KZitem won't add volume to a track to make it louder but will limit its loudness?

I used to set my limiter's ceiling at -0.1dB. It was just the staple and I never even thought about it. Nowadays it's always at least -1.0dB. As for loudness...I really don't think it matters nowadays. Some of my masters sound really REALLY quiet compared to "commercial" masters, but on streaming sites, as you say, it's all normalised, so everything sounds the same volume. if it doesn't, well, there's the volume knob on the stereo. I mostly record metal bands so that genre can be pushed a little more with the limiter's threshold, but even still, I just get it so it sounds decent without being destroyed. I prefer a master which is quieter and more dynamic anyway, although there are some clients who just insist on crushing everything to get that ego rub of "it's just as loud as my favourite band".

they all work off average loudness ( integrated LUFs) so if you add a long and really QUIET outro it will bring down the overall average loudness value of your whole track... so they wont turn it down as much resulting in a louder track. I wouldnt aim for -14LUFs for club or edm music ... doesnt have the same energy and overall glue. Also distributors only use the 1 file to pump it out to all platforms so -14LUFS might be ok on spotify but not beatport... and i would do a separate master for soundcloud ..push it harder and boost the highs a tad more as you lose them from the conversion

I like how there's no mention of listening to music from flash memory/PC. Only online streaming services (which I don't use at all). Ah, technology :) anyway the video should be called "mastering for streaming platforms", this is not the kind of mastering I would do (I mean just to fit into those services). Still, that will be helpful to many people. Good tutorial.

This is still one of the, of not the best way to master when playing back from CD, flash drives or Hard disk drives

I have one question though. What if you're mastering for multiple sites? Would you just find an area of compromise between the volume of all the services?

Excellent video. Probably the clearest explanation I've heard for how to handle this issue in these times. Thanks.

what about uploading on places like Ditto, do you still need to do this?

7:48 thank you for the words about pushing it a few dB more! there are countless dumb tutorials about making your tracks just -14 LUFS, while the limited sound may sound a bit better if it's done right! And it's personal preference how much dynamics you want in your track! In EDM I often aim for around -7 or -8 LUFS short term in the drop. If it's more dynamic, it sounds like the percussive peaks are not glued enough with the rest :) cheers!

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Spotify must then be horrible for classical music if they’re compressing its dynamic range into only 14 or 13 LUFS. What ever happened to the civilized target of 23 or 24 LUFS? Further, why standardize at 14 if that’s too narrow for a few important kinds of music?

In my opinion, its because the streaming industry is built for the music that gets streamed the most, which is the most brutally compressed music :'l If I had to guess!

My big challenge is I can't get both -14dB LUFS and -1dB true peak. I can get one or the other, not both.

Thanks. I master my track in -14 LUFS and -1 True Pick. But when I compare it with spotify songs my track loudness is lower than spotify songs. Why?

-11.5 db of limiting from a single limiter???? WTF would anybody pay you to destroy their music???? So much bad information.

Joely Barish if you’ve done your gain staging correctly it’s the true peak that matters the most not the amount of limiting
