Limitations can be good. Having too many options is often counterproductive. At least, in my experience. I must admit that I use only 10% of all the plugins I bought over the years.

You don't need that many plugins. I'm starting on this, professionally and since the begining I'm living in the digital world. The biggest problem that I had was the access to that many plugins. It was hard to finish a mix. So I did limit myself to use just a couple of plugins, for most of the things just the ssl channel strip. My mixing got improved because now I focus on what's really important.

Im thinking it is the equivalent of having 1 mixer...like back in the days in minor home recordiing studios and if you want more character waves NLS gives up to 32 stereo channels of summing i believe (each channel is unique). But im curious now if this UC 1 could be a better approach ???

@@AnalogFlava Let’s set the UCI as a controller aside for a second and talk just about the plug-ins. I like you in a long time user of waves SSL plug-in, and I always thought it was a really good sounding plug-in, I’ve used it on practically every mix I’ve done for the last maybe 5 to 10 years. So I heard about the UC1 and it just made me think, let me go try those plug-ins everybody seems to be raving about them. So I download the demo, don’t get me started on that, that was a complete mess, their process is ridiculous, but then I started using the plug-ins, and I was shocked. I mean it was night and day better than the waves plug-in. They are expensive plug-ins and if you buy both of them together it’s $660. That’s a lot of money for two plug-ins, but I was so taken back by how well they sounded, that’s what made me consider the MC1. Because I’ve got such a great control surface, I honestly don’t need the controller part of the MC1. Don’t get me wrong, it’s laid out very well, and I’ll be doing a video on my experiences with it coming out in the future. But let’s stay focus on the plug-ins for a second, I’ll be honest with you I think they’re great, I highly recommend that you get the demo, which the process is convoluted, and try them out for yourself to see if you think they’re worth the price. If you decide you want to go with both plug-ins, then at that point the control service is a no-brainer, as it’s only $250 more than buying both plug-ins.

I just bought one to integrate into my workflow and so far, I love it. I've ben mixing professionally for 22 years, but I've been ITB the whole time, so all of my mix decisions have been consciously or subconsciously influenced by screens. With this system, its delightful EQ-ing and compressing solely by ear, as odd as that seems. I've used the SSL V2 plugins for a few weeks and already realized how far above and beyond they are to other channel strip plugs (I have all of them). To me, its not even close. So the decision to buy the UC1 and go all out was easy. I work in TV post production, so I'm actually integrating this into my post workflow and am finding it refreshing as well for mixing. Instead of choosing from 1 of a thousand EQs or compressors, I have the strip on every channel and try to get as finished a mix as I can with just that. From there, of course, I'll pepper with anything needed....digital EQ/s (Q3), saturation, effects, deessers, etc. But for a foundation, I'm going to roll with this for a while. I work in Nuendo and thought I would be annoyed that it doesn't follow the track, like my Steinberg CC121. However, the scroll wheel is so fast and intuitive, that its actually better, I think. I can click on other tracks and work on them while being able to separately focus the UC1 wherever I want. I had no idea I would like that, but I do. To your point, we all can suffer from having too many choices. More and more, I'm narrowing down my choices and am much happier with the workflow and the results.

Mine just arrived, I was in the process of unpacking when I saw your comment. I’m looking very forward to trying it out. If you think about it, the plugins themselves are $480, the controller with plugins is $850 so the question for people who don’t already own the plugins, is adding the controller worth $370? I’ll soon find out. Regardless of I keep the controller or not, I’ll buy the plugins. I’m currently on their 30 day demo, so I won’t even have to register the plugins that ship with it to try it out.

I ended up just getting the SSL v6 subscription which gives me all the plugs for the year. Not a bad deal for 150. I want the UC1 but I risk the loss of table space. I’ve learned that when I cut or boost frequencies to my liking I’ve committed to making a preset for it ans what instrument it applies to. For most part the channel sounds much better than the competition that I’ve just committed to SSL. Cubase stock EQ is also good along with Ableton EQ8. I’ve spent more time studying all three. Remember what Bruce Lee said, « I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. ». That’s how I feel about plugins. I’ve mastered the 9000k softube expansion and carried it over to the new SSL 9000K channel. There’s some adjustments needed but I know when to EQ just from hearing raw material .

@@raal007 HI. I'm in Nuendo, but it also doesn't have track follow. Surprisingly, I've found that i like that it doesn't have track follow. I have another controller that does have track follow, and it has a fader, panning, automation, etc. I like that I can whiz around my session with that controller and have the UC1 focused anywhere else I want. Perhaps I want the UC1 focused on the bass while I jump around and play with drum levels, while simultaneously tweaking the EQ or compression of my bass. Just an example. Also, I can't emphasize enough how great the rotary wheel and little LCD screen are for navigating as well. I think ideally, they should have OPTIONAL track follow in the future. Honestly, I don't know if I would ever turn it on.

And the work flow is very similar.. what i would say is that when sterile tracks come through Plugin alliance has some incredible imitations of different neve/api/tube consoles.. and i put those channels preamps on, to get the flavor of what i would like to hear; and/or digital insert. And then the new ssl chnl strip on everything to mimic the console most records have been mixed on.. sometimes i use the ssl.. sometimes the townsend from PA rarely other bus comps..

I may be an outsider, I'm a musician/Singer/Songwriter that was hurled into the recording/mixing chair a couple of years ago. At first I bought 3rd party plugins because I thought I would get better results than the stock "Reaper" plugins for my demos. As many know, It's challenging to wear all the hats required to make sounds into songs. Not only the recording/mixing aspect but doing it all with a guitar/Bass/drumsticks/Cables or a boom stand that droops in your hands. Not to mention the Go Go Gadget arm needed to set levels while playing a drum kit without bumping into a well placed microphone...I was looking for short cuts and honestly, I didn't even know where to start. I learned a lot from the presets. I bought everything that looked like a channel strip, which I'm still a big fan of but now I'm a bit more selective. The "Boutique" or "Hi-End" plugins do make a difference, how much is up to the listener I guess. I have found that while my record/mix skills have improved, a few of these plugins do most of the work now. To close it out, here's my thought process...Wal-Mart plugins, Home Depot plugins, Cabinet shop plugins and Custom cabinet shop plugins. I hope that makes sense! Now I have a rack of pre-amps and compressors (mostly budget) that helped me get what I was hearing in my head. I take every measure possible to effect or not effect the signal on the front end. That was a huge leap forward for me. ~Carry on my friends~

I made a spreadsheet a few years ago with all my plugins listed by type and most used to least used within each type. It was a shocking eye opener when I saw it all together like that. A little embarrassing too. FYI, I now have just over 200 plugins total, and to be fair, at least a third were free, if not more. Long story short, I sold over $7,000 worth of plugins I wasn't using, including my entire UAD rig (so glad - never looked back) and have been carefully and judiciously investing in new plugins since then. Before buying any new plugin type, I first rigorously compare it to what I have and in most cases, I not only find I've got that area well covered, but I often learn more about the plugins I already have. I recently discovered Acustica's N4 and now I'm doing another purge and rebuilding my plugin tool kit with these new incredible tools.

I’m just now getting to the SSL channel strip from my production and I realized that it’s so much better than what I was using before. Prior to this, I used a hodgepodge of Plugins for a long time and then about two years ago, I settled into using the cla mix hub, the one that emulates an API lunchbox. I loved it for a while because of its simplicity, and I thought that it sounds better than the waves version of the channel strips. But I always felt there was something lacking, and I couldn’t put my finger on it especially since I have use an actual SSL console in real life I just chalked it up to SOFTWARE being software not always being the same as hardware. But then I tried the SSL channel strip three days ago on two sessions and oh my God night and day difference. So I don’t think I’m going to use any other channel strips for a long time. The main thing for me with this I never liked recording with the SSL console. What I like to doing, was using any other channel strip to process the audio first usually something Neve. Then after I processed it, I would mix it on the SSL. This is true for in the box mainly because the SSL is so much easier to mix on than anything else as long as you’ve done all the hard work before hand you made the tone sound as close to what you really want to sound like and now you’re just balancing everything. Being able to do that with one plugin with compression and not have to sit here stress about it because that is quite literally how nearly every classic record was ever made. Felt so much better.

after trying and buying lot's of EQs and other plugins, I agree that just having one perfect hardware controlled plugin for EQ and compression would probably also be the best for my workflow. But I don't like the extra software layer of the console 1 and the UC1. E.g. volume in Console 1 is separated from the DAW volume. I like the concept of TC Electronic, just having one dedicated hardware for just one dedicated plugin still directly integrated in the DAW. I already use the DVR 250 and I love it. Next week the PEQ 3000 and the DYN 3000 will arrive before christmas and I'm very curious about it. :-)

My setup has been melted down to the most used plugins. Since I mix dialogue almost all day, it got down to features and useability. That was Fabfilter Pro-Q3 and Fabfilter Pro-C2 for the most part. Funny enough however, the SSL Channelstrip (v2 works with my license too) is damn fine on dialogue as well, so I'm using that too. I setup control with a Midi Figher Twister (rugged DJ Knob controller) for that. Works like a charm too, though occasionally I'll break out the mouse. Essential tools get the job done. It's somewhat rare for me to branch off to exotics, so I rarely buy plugins any longer. Until I spot a great deal of a flavour I love, like Blackrooster Audio comps. What can you do.

I love the idea, you aren’t limited to just one, you can add if you need to, but I find having a basic strip across all channels with dedicated hardware control is brilliant… Simple is better… Who doesn’t want an SSL console and this is probably the closest I’ll ever get… I really like that I’m forced to use “what I’ve got” it’s almost always enough and I don’t have to go digging though 75 plugins trying different stuff wasting hours to do what can be done without even looking at in just a few seconds… And it’s still a box so if I need something different that option is always there if I need it… I think it’s foreword thinking, love it…

Which waves SSL were you using? One of the newer EVO or CLA ones, or the old one from like 2007ish? The newer ones are much better but crazy high on CPU. In general the waves 4k plugs are good for sounds that are "soft" and need a bit more edge to stand out. Something like the SSL or PA versions of the 4k are smoother and are better on sounds that might be a bit too harsh that you want to have a softer feel IMO. I have well over 1000 plugins, but some companies like acustica and waves will install like 5 seperate plugins when you buy 1, and some companies don't allow you to not install both vst2 and vst3 versions.

For example I got Slate subscription (love them or hate them)... there are three different 1176 emulation, four if you count that special all buttons in compressor, and also a bunch of other eq's, saturators and all that... so why the hell would I need a bunch more emulations of the same thing from a bunch of different companies? I know they don't all sound the same, but if the tools you do have and like to use sound good, don't complicate your life with a choice of 5 others emulating the same thing. And if something really good comes along the way, I replace the old thing instead of just adding more. Made my workflow much easier.

Will be interested in your thoughts on the UC1 controller. I have the Console 1 with the SSL 4k, the British Class A (Neve), and the American Class A (API). Love the sound of the plugins and the workflow the hardware adds. I totally get the question of "how many do you need". It's really cool to be able to use a channel strip of a console that is revered the way that these are and to eliminate SO much analysis that happens as a result of plugin sifting that I think we all go through. I've done a few reviews/demos on my (startup) channel as well. Id' like to get my hands on the SSL stuff just to see/hear the difference, but to answer the question: I like having a few strips to go to and also the imposed limitations of not having SO many to choose from. I think that the SSL option might be too limiting for me, primarily because the SSL4k is my least favorite of the Console 1 emulations. Thanks for the thought conversation.

I have a bunch of EQ's but not too many. I have the Waves F6 because it's super easy to sidechain the reduction; I have the Lisa because I really like the auto listen feature and the per-band compression (as well as the mid-side and different channel emulations); I have the Maag because of the air band and sub band; I have the the Pulsar Massive Passive because it's got a super smooth sounding top end ,l a lovely and round sounding bottom end, a really nice drive and gain and honestly no matter you do with that thing it somehow comes out sounding great (plus I love the character it gets from it changing the Q based on the gain). I also have the SSL Native channel strip EQ which I'll sometimes use just for small corrections when using the channel and also a Neve emulation so I can do the ol' bass trick with the boost and cut. It might sound like too many but I feel I get use out of each one for different reasons. The only EQ I feel I'd like to get after this is the Kirchhoff, simply because from what I've seen you can pretty much match any EQ out there with it so long as you have the patience to match the curves. I also have the Amek 200 but honestly I don't really use it that much (maybe I should give it a go) so that one was for sure an impulse purchase.

For this spontaneious test I used 1. my brainworx ssl channelstrip, 2. the new brainworx neve amek 9098 and 3. the stock plugins in Cubase 11. First test I compared just the EQs. For this I used only one instrument: It was my recording of a real bass (rock style). I dialed in exact numbers in all EQs. The result: -> Yes, they sound a little bit different. But it's important to know, the vintage emulations are not exact compared to the numbers!! Do they sound different because they focus broader Q-factors or boost/cut shifted frequency ranges? How tight is the phase? I didn't want to accept the result. So I dialed in the precise cubase EQ by ear to match the others. This time I came very close. I am sure, in a blindtest you could not point out what's better and what's worse. Second test I dialed in a dirty sound individually on every channelstrip: The aim: It should sound dirty, warm and compressed with some additional harmonics with slight overdrive (tube sat, tape sat) etc. - you get the idea. In cubase I used additional stock plugins for slight tube drive and tape sat. In the other channels I only used tools they offer internaly. The result?: I could create a much more characterful "analog" driven sound with the stock plugins in cubase 11 than with the dedicated emulation plugins. Now I think, do I really need over 20 EQ or compressor plugins to sound great?

Cool video. I just bought the UC1 and love it! I think it can be a good thing to have more than one channel strip. However, I personally think you could get away with just having one, especially if you have a few other tools to create different character and color like a good saturation or tape plugin like Soundtoys Decapitator or Waves J37/Kramer Master Tape, or XLN RC 20 Retro. These plugins can change up the color and character that imho can get you the sound of other channel strips. The UC1 has a very smooth and clean sound to it. Select the E and get a tad bit more of a mid range color to the EQ section. But if you throw on the previously mentioned plugins on a bus or master bus, you will instantly turn the UC1 into a more dirty or colored channel strip similar to an SSL 4000E or G etc... In the end it is all about having fun and getting the results you desire. If that means having a lot of different channel strips? Then definitely do that. Or if you get the results you love with one? Then do that. On a side note, the UC1 has sped up my workflow ten fold! It is such a blessing to be able to have physical controls and close your eyes while turning two knobs at once. This is super helpful when trying to get a track to sit in the mix or find bad or good frequencies fast while listening to the track with all the music together. And to top it off the SSL Bus Compressor 2 and Channel Strip 2 sound amazing! To my ears they sound like hardware. That clarity you get from them. I find working in the box made me solo stuff more, which in the end I usually had to go back and remix. So I am definitely sticking with the UC1 for awhile.

I don't use a hardware controller but I often have the same thoughts - do I really need so many channel strip, EQ and compressor plugins? I record through an analog console & a collection of Neve and other preamps and use hardware compressors on the way in, so I don't need to emulate any analog flavour. Many of my tracks need only light EQ & compression in the mix. In my case the stock EQ and compressors in my DAW could actually be all I need . . . The only argument for other EQ & compressor plugins is that they offer a bigger choice of flavours. You make some good points, thanks

Depends on the feel of a project, I have about 30 VST3 and VST3i (EDIT) and the stock plugins, about 70 from my DAW Reaper, I work in the box, most of the tracking is in hands outhouse. Like the Mäag EQ2 and EQ4, for a airy sound, with the airband. And a AMEK 200 Mastering, and a Townhouse buss compressor. And several reverbs, delays. if I use a channelstrip, it depends on the genre, SSL are raw and has more grit, the AMEK 9099 and the Focusrite SC are too silky for rock. I cannot choose one strip and a EQ. It doesn't work that way. I'm saving money for 3 units from the Icon mixers. Yours are mindblowing :)

It has been 2 weeks since receiving the UC-1. Using Studio One. Console 1 Fader. Having learned on SSL consoles in the early 90's, It was like coming home. To feel those knobs under your fingers and have all you need in one place was perfect. Sound: Well this is subjective - Back in the day I was working in zillion dollar control rooms with incredible monitors. My room is treated well and is nice and flat. Does the channel strip sound better than the great plug-ins I own from Brainworx? NO... It Does Not. Does it sound like a real SSL? Again, subjective. But...the combination of the controller - (Which by the way is big and built like a tank) the 360 software and the ability to close your eyes and tweak... this is a winner! The UC-1 is not just a controller sitting off to the side of your desk...It Is Your Desk!

Modern production I think only requires 3 eqs to make an effective mix: 1 non linear, 1 linear, and one dynamic. The rest is all unnecessary, and I say this as someone reasonably invested in waves, plugin alliance, and a few other big companies. I really love the tonality of all the emulations, but I really only need those 3 types of eq and I could probably do mostly the same work. Fab filter and izotope neutron are probably the best investments for someone just starting out that has zero experience doing any of this and has no attachment or experience with the hardware being emulated. This might be controversial but honestly emulations and what mojo we strive for is subjective and also for the sake of work flow more than anything else.

I considered this a while ago, creating a category listing of all my plugins. In a number of cases I found out I had duplicates of the same plugins, just from different developers. I dealt with that quickly. I do have two systems in which one has the UAD ecosystem. On the other one I opted to just install the native equivalent of the UAD stuff (if there was one available) just to keep things consistent with my sound in mixing. I still purchase plugins, but only if the fx variety to create new sounds (no reverbs, delays, or basics tho).

The problem is, the more console strips you have the less you are going to use them. I used to mix on a Neve VR and I never questioned if I should use that console or not because it simply was there. I just had this one at my disposal and it sounded great. Now, I knew API sounded great, too, and Amek, and SSL, and Harrison...But I am no millionaire so I couldn't buy those, just to have it around in case...(btw, where should I put them??) And if I had them around, how could one decide if the other console is better for this or that? They all sound great!? So you will end up in a rabbit hole and while you are there you miss the chance to really, really learn the one console you've got all along. Nowadays, everyone can have the plugins of any modelled console, for a ridiculous price. However, by collecting all that gems you actually pay with giving away your expertise on one particular console. Just ask yourself: If it wasn't the plugin but the real deal, would you spend hard-earned money to just have it standing around in your basement for the case...?

So I've scaled back and just kept the SSL native stuff (love all of it), Metric Halo channel strip, a handful of coloring EQs (i.e, Pultec) and some really nice compressor plugins and reverbs (along with utility and creative plugins). At this point I'd rather invest in great quality stuff than collect a bunch of poor sounding ones. That said, curious to hear how you like the UC1--it's visually enticing and I hope it works just as well.

ARG. To be honest. Just on my main Ilok, there are 380 licenses. That doesn't include the ones who don't use ilok. I have ALL SLL, Neve, by UAD, API, Waves, Slate, Plugin Alliance, Kit, etc. But it was the deals I took advantage of them over the years, and occasionally, I'll be like hey, let me try this. But let's put it this way, when I am looking for something, and it isn't working for me, I can switch out for something different quickly. One channel strip maybe. But considering you have options to have a Neve on this, SSL 4k on this, 9K on that, API on this. I mean, back in the day tracking meant moving to a new studio. Mixing meant one console and a budget for outboard. You could literally now use an SSL 4k for verse drums and a Neve for the chorus if that is your liking. The downside is, too many choices could mean too much time deciding on what to use. Then ear fatique and over familiarity of material, concentrating too much on what A sounds like to B and day is over and you haven't mixed shit. Either pick one, or build your template with what you will always use. If it is SSL kick and NEVE snare whatever, just build your template. in the mix something isn;t owkring remove console EQ and insert something else. I've done the pick and go. Better to have what you like mostly. And sometimes you will change it or have different templates for different things. Be like CLA. He is set up for everything and everything comes into the same place, with the same setting generally which might get a small tweak. Saves time, stress and sounds good.
