One thing that I never understood - going into debt for 'passion'. If the lady enjoys helping people, she can always volunteer her time to help others, without incurring a debt to go to school. IMo, doing what you love for a living is overrated - especially if it can financially ruin you. It's just not worth it.

During the first and second years, you are required to attend classes all day and then will have to study most evenings and almost every weekend to keep up with the amount of material.

As veterinarian the love of job/not feeling like working another day wears off over the years. Compassion fatigue sets in with long hours, impatient people, being short staffed ect start weigh on your soul. Then your trapped in hundreds thousands of student loan debt so hopefully she for sure this is a true passion because once she has the debt basically a indentured servant to student loans. Health care jobs do have better public loan service forgiveness but make less typically through those programs. I sold my house while market was up down sized to mobile home and got sign on bonus hopefully be debt free in 2 to 3 years. Only debt I have is student loans. I worked 3 jobs in undergrad to have it paid for as I went. Unfortunately this is not the case with vet school or case with most higher education schools as the time commitment and cost are so high cant pay as you go in most cases unless parent helps or have support elsewhere. I graduated 8 years ago. The debt levels I see now almost doubled to graduate. Just 8 year before I graduated the cost was 1/4 of what I paid. I seen article first year dental school in New York 125k just for first year. Unfortunately all this costs of education are going be paid by the clients from pet care to dental care. Im fearful what going cost get root canal in 10 years from now when dentists have 500k in student loans as going cost more to pay said dentists so they can live to feed a family and feed the loan beast. Dont come at me saying you took loans out have pay them back because I am paying them back.

Oh, my gosh. First, congratulations on getting this lovely couple to talk so openly in public! I would love to sit down and talk to them to offer a little hard-earned wisdom. Pay off everything you can before quitting a source of income and incurring more debt. I'm not including the student loan debt but you need to look at how much your payments will be after med school. Buy nothing, not furniture, clothes anything for the house before that debt is eliminated. My heart went out to the young man when I saw the stress he was feeling. You were very kind and encouraging to them about the credit card and car debt. O.K., one more piece of advice. Buy used for your home. I'm not talking about soft furniture such as sofas, chairs or mattresses for sanitary purposes, unless you know who's selling it. Tables, chairs, chests, bookcases or anything considered "hard" can be cleaned and painted if necessary and 1/4 the cost of new. Think about it. Also, entertain at home. Invite your friends. I know this sounds corny and from your grandmother; but, try it. Please address all rude comments to my grandchildren as they will understand what you're saying better than I, lol.

I’d suggest to look into nursing programs. But even that, it also requires many prerequisites and very competitive. How much money do you spend eating out? Do you purchase what you think or assets but are really liabilities (like your house)? These are all things that affect how much liquid cash you have. More money doesn't solve the problem. Knowing how to use your money makes all of the difference. If we make it work on less than 80K a year, you can too. It just might not look as fancy as you want it to, but you have to sacrifice a little to get a lot. Otherwise, you give away everything trying to have too much. When I was in school I got tuition reimbursement through my work. I was only part time but it helped a lot. If I wanted to go back to school now I would definitely try to find a job with this benefit. I had friends who took one class ever semester because it was free for them. Best option for studying and staying out of debt.

I've never been to Austin, but aren't there safe areas to live that cost less than $3k for an apartment? That seems like an exorbitant amount to spend when their income is $72k combined.

I'm cash flowing my part-time degree while working full-time to keep from getting any more student loans. It's doable now. I think if I was younger it would have burned me out, because I was a lot less focused then. I'm also better at taking care of my health now. I think this is what he's missing about his "burn-out" point when working even part-time while in school, is that everyone's different, and everyone changes. They can at least give it a try for one semester.

Thats an insane percentage of people who have debt without an actual degree, 40%! I'm not judging, we push people into an education taking loans out when they are too young. They have no real financial literacy, and the reality is there is no guarantee that a degree will result in a well paying job.
