If you just cycle, free camp and cook yourself it can be extremely cheap. Many people do it for just a few hundred dollars a month. Most of the costs are due to overhead (insurance, bicycle maintenance etc) and food. After that it depends a lot on where you go and how much luxuries you want. I remember getting sticker-shock after arriving in Sydney. Had traveled extremely cheap for a while, just food and a couple of dollars on national park camp sites. Then in Sydney just 2 or 3 nights in a hostel was more expensive then all my expenses the month before....

Apologies for the settings of our economy in NZ. Food is expensive by world standards - in a country that is overflowing with its own produce. Why? To make profits for the small number of people who own food producing businesses. That's capitalism. Most NZ food is exported and sold overseas at premium prices. Because of the ideology of so-called free markets, locals have to suffer similar premium prices for NZ food. Imported food has the additional costs of transportation and then is sold into a market where price settings are already elevated.

Thank for this Jin, its great to have some realistic channels like yours. I've hosted in Warmshowers for many years so I've met a lot of people starting their cross-europe to Asia trips. Some have very unrealistic ideas of cost and how much they can earn doing this things like social media. The more 'real' information there is like this out there, the better.

It is hard to fathom why Australia is way more expensive that almost anywhere else. We are a resource rich country but manufacture nothing and seem to import foods we could grow here easily. Very odd to say the least I was shocked to see a continental cucumber in woolies was $4 😯. You can though, get all your vitamin b requirements from one of those as Jin clearly knows 🤗 It is tough on the road as your needs nutritionally are vastly different than when living a stable / normal life. Pasta and vitamin pills might be the go 🤷♀️ Personally, I live on sludge 😂 Whatever I have ? I cook 👩🍳 I must say that on the few longer tours I have done over the years ? People have been for the best part very kind / generous. I agree with a comment here that you could do it cheaper camping out etc, plus Warmshowers ( I have hosted cycle tourists via Warmshowers in the past ) When, well, IF, what with this supposed deadly flu seemingly ravaging the world, I hit the road to ride around / across / everywhere in between, to Ride Around Australia, I would take advantage of Warmshowers and definitely camp as much as I possibly could. Another good idea is to be as prepared as you can pre tour. Some good information in this video I must say

I heard foods at Korean grocery is expensive too sadly. #1 reason too many people in a small land #2 The land is mountainous so there is not enough land to farm. #3 too many small farms to grow massive foods. We need a big farm company to improve farm efficiency but people won't like a big company. I think Europe is most reasonable for cheap good quality foods at the grocery stores.

Australia is not cheap, but Jin’s expenses there mainly reflect that she was more settled. For much of the time she had jobs, lived in cities, went out, and basically lived more like everyone else rather than a nomadic tent dweller in the rain, wind and dust. It wasn’t the worst place in the world to be trapped by covid.

Such trailers exist, but guess what: The mass of the trailer gets added to the mass of all the other kit so the total mass you have to accelerate increases. F=ma. If you increase the mass you have to increase the force to obtain a given acceleration. However trailers do offer improved handling and balance.

Great video on the costs of touring. I oured all over western europe and canada between '89 and 91 and found the costs really cheap. I would knock on a farmers door and ask for permission to camp in a field as this would usually include access to running water for cooking and it was a great way to meet the locals. 25yrs later our cycle touring budget is around $300aud/day for europe except for Sicily which was only about $150aud . Being older camping has lost it's appeal somewhat :-)
