Yeah, back in my day, when I first started out, back in the early 90's, there really weren't any sponge filters so conveniently available; and with that fact not withstanding in light of the current popularity, not to mention the overall functionality-- nowadays, I wouldn't settle for anything less. Simple physics, and in essence, does multiple jobs at once. The perfect tool. Cory you and your tream are the elite best in the U.S. sir. Period.

I’m really considering an undergravel filter for planted tanks. I’ve done it in the past for non planted tanks, using Hot Magnum 250 canister filters for powerheads, but I can see how it would be awesome for plants. Not sure about what kind of a filter hack I’d use. I’m thinking of using my hang on back filters in place of powerheads.

I know this is a bit late, but with the brown algae. I had the same issue and unfortunately my fix was RODI water. My water was heavy with silicates and by doing the proper cycling and water changes I helped feed it every single week. I figured this out by realizing that the scum I cleaned out of my sinks and toilets was actually the same thing. So it was just in my tap. I went to my county's water report to find the wells where in a sand bed and heavy on phosphates and silicates. I switched to RODI with equilibrium and easy green for the plants and now I haven't had a single outbreak since.

For the biohome and biogravel to produce anarobic bacteria (the one that converts nitrates to nitrogen gas). They advise to have about 1kg of media for every 100 litres with slow flow with good Mechanical fitration to remove detritus (Course, medium and fine sponge pads). It costs $18.50 per kg so can get expensive if you have a large tank.

@Aquarium Co-Op Hey i have a pretty simple Question and would like to know what you think. So we have a Sump with 3 liters of Biologic Filtermediavolume inside, the Pump is running with 2100l/h. If we now Up the Filtermediavolume by 2 Liters (so 5 Liters inside now) and reduce the flow of the Pump to 1500l/h, do you think that compensates for the filter performance? Just in theorie if you would know the ratio. Of course, the adjustment would only be possible up to a certain limit. I am looking forward to your answer! :D Cheers Timo

I was thinking about what you said about a rate of filtration or what you would need. I think you were on the right track when you mentioned how much food you put in. How much food translates into how much waste minus whatever the fish use for their own nutrition and growth. Maybe a fair test or rating of a filtration system would be how much food can you pour inWhatever size tank daily before it gets to the point where it’s so clogged up it needs to be cleaned out. What are your thoughts about that?

Watched the whole video as well as many other videos but still not sure if what I'm using is enough for my tank! If you respond to old comments I'd love to know a few things specific to my set up. Just changed some things after several other fancy goldfish died after 9 months. Tank has been established for almost two years. Twenty-nine gallon tank, two two inch fancy goldfish, emporer with two bio wheels, course 2 1/2 inch sponge on each side with floss in front of them, a small bag of bio-rings on one side, peasize gravel and just started tank plants (I bought from your website) and an intake filter sponge (I also bought from your website). I use a 240 mph circulation/wave pump that I move around. Is this overkill? I also have very hard water and my nitrates (40ppm) and pH (8.4 high range solution) are typically high even after 20 to 40% water changes approx every 5-7 days (depending on my parameters), ammonia and nitrates are always perfect. I worry about oxygenation since my kiddos "yawn" often, but never troll for oxygen at the surface. Tank heater set at 73° and feed a variety of food two times a day very small portions but mostly veggies with some protein and occasional snacks (bloodworms). I've been considering switching to a pond pump recommended by Goldfish 911. Sorry so long, hope your able to respond.

Very interesting to learn you are changing your filtration on the 800 gal. Seemed like you loved the canister with its backflow system. I am trying to reduce nitrates by mechanical means as it sounds like you are (to reduce water changes). I am using filter socks on a sump. There should be other ways to catch the waste before it becomes nitrate. Please invent something.

Hi, thank you for this helpful video. My question is about those pre filter sponges. In one of your previous videos where you showed someone else’s fish room, you briefly focused on the use of a particular pre filter sponge. This sponge could be taken out of the aquarium for cleaning and would not release detritus or gunk as it was being pulled away. You see, normally I would need to place a small freezer bag around my pre-filter sponge before taking it out so as to prevent stuff from seeping out. Other people use plastic cups etc. However, the guy you showed in your video claimed he could take his sponge out and nothing would seep back into the water column. Could you tell me which type of sponge was this? Was it the coarse variety or the fine variety? I’ll be grateful if you could let me know when you get the chance. Cheers. Tolga

Hi Cory Love watching your vids. Interested to know your thoughts on sponge vs matten filters. Have always bought canister filters in the past but since watching your earlier vids I have combined sponge filters as well and seeing I now have 8 aquariums ranging from 2 feet to 6 feet I am looking to convert to Matten filtration which I believe is just a giant sponge filter. My main concern is I don't thing I will have enough circulation in my larger tanks. All tanks are for breeding guppies and shrimp except for a 5 foot which keeps Goldfish. Cheers from Australia and keep up the great information much appreciated PS: 1st time post cheers

Hey Corey I'm watching TWO years later despite the audio issues! I'm currently running a fully stocked well planted 75 gal.- three angels, 12 diamond tetras, BN pleco, rainbow shark, a couple rainbows. I've been filtering with a hamburg mattenfilter with a QuietOne 1200 pump driving it. I bought an Aquaclear 110, thinking more flow would reduce the surface film. Then I look at the amount of sponge between the two, and wonder if the swap is a good idea. The HMF obviously is more area at 18x20x3" but the surface is gross. The AQ110 moves more water, but has so much less area. What would you do? (BTW, Canisters are out ($$), air pumps are out (noise), and multiple HOBs are out (back of tank rim is occupied by light clamps)....what's the better choice between the two I have??
