Advice from someone with years of experience in Amazon: Flex is definitely ideal compared to being a part of one of the DSP teams, speaking from a full year of delivery experience with the vans, driving over 15,000 miles. Getting in and out of a van hundreds of times a day and regular overtime hours during Peak season is horrendous to your body and will break you down. If you do this long enough in your own vehicle, it will wear your vehicle down. (I know this also from years of contracted courier work) Everyone gets covid and there are no restrooms for 20mins out of the way from route. There has been human feces and urine inside my vans from the others. There has been the same inside the warehouses and airport containers as well. Flex is much more ideal if your personal vehicle is reliable and great on gas. Otherwise do not do it. Also be cautious of the dogs and aggressive customers. For an idea of how much better Flex is, our drivers would do their regular route for 10+ hrs then help with Flex packages at the end of the night for the brownie points. Everyone is bitten, often dealing with hostile customers, unable to regulate the ambient temperature of the vans, no restrooms available, higher risk of contracting covid/illnesses, crippling injuries and wear on your body, etc. They have a rule to not have food/treats for the dogs but I promise it will save you from harm. It saved me countless times. Do not put your body out and experience life-changing injuries for Amazon. I have worked in warehouses and in operations multiple times as well and have seen people lose their legs, ruin their backs, have the skin ripped off their hands, and have personally ruined my own knee, have nerve damage in one thigh, and have had my hands crushed. Not to mention the severe heat exhaustion in the summers. You remain weaker and more susceptible to it for the rest of your life. Everyone is replaceable to Amazon, do not forget it. I do not recommend working for them long-term without a plan out.

I love your honesty and 100% agree with the last part. I worked in one of their warehouses for 4 months and had to come into direct contact with something that I am very allergic to. I was in their medical "nurse's office" type of room because of this and when I complained that this was avoidable I was told that they wouldn't change my role or location. I just had to deal with it. They really don't care about their employees

Jesus christ, why did you stay so long? I find that some companies are like abusive partners in a way, that they somehow convince you to stay even when you know that it's not worth what they're giving you. Amazon seems like a pretty manipulative company to me, I applied once and turned my nose up when they seemed to be trying to present having the mental faculties to be able to work warehouse as some kind of special achievement. That made me sort of... wonder if there's something about the way the workers continue to interact with this company beyond the simple transaction of money for labor that keeps people from quitting.
@WastedTalent-

You're absolutely right. I worked for a DSP last summer. I also worked for the USPS as an RCA. I will say that Amazon was infinately better than the USPS. With the USPS, those little trucks they drive do not have AC or heat. During the summer, you sweat your ass off because it is around 20-30°F hotter inside than outside. In the winter, you freeze your ass off. My knees aren't good to begin with, so getting in and out of the van was becoming an issue. I had no problem with the Amazon branded vans because they had a lower step than the white ones. I really liked the job, but they wouldn't adjust my schedule so I could work certain days because I got a part time job with the county. What also killed me was delivering to a huge apartment complex with 45 stops in 100° heat and each delivery was 50-100 yards away from each other and not accessible to drive. Then I was sent into a city where it looked like a bombed out inner city from the 80's. It was scary. Going into buildings where I had to step around drug addicts nodding off with needles in their arms. Having people walk around the van, playing with the handles. I called dispatch about it and they said I had to keep delivering, even though I was not safe. I'm a 46 year old woman who isn't afraid of shit, but ths place scared me. I thought about Flex, but I don't want the wear and tear on my vehicle. A good chunk of your pay is going to gas, especially in rural upstate NY where the gas prices are still in the mid to upper $3 and I drive an old Jeep Cherokee XJ that eats gas.

It's been years since I've felt inclined to leave a comment on a KZitem video, but I wanted to say that you're benefiting this side of the internet by educating them about these types of jobs. In this day and age where everyone has access to leave a comment about something they vaguely know about, there's a lot of misinformation spread. I'm glad you're having a great experience, and in the same breath, I can say that I'm empathetic for those who aren't. At the end of the day, it's up to the individual to figure out whether something like this is sustainable for them, but having your honest perspective out there gives some useful insight. I work in a warehouse currently. It's tough work and most people bash it before they've given their body time to adjust to the physical requirements, but it's been a blessing for me personally. It pays much more than the minimum wage here, and if you have a financial goal you're working towards, this is one of the most reliable ways to get there. Also as you mentioned in the video, at most jobs like this, there are incentives for working at a higher efficiency. Occupation talk aside, I think I speak for a majority when I say no matter what direction you take your channel in, it's your personality that keeps us invested. Thank you for your transparency and dedication to putting out content.

Would love to hear your perspective about doing uber and lyft as well - it would be funny to hear any stories you have as well as what its actually like. As someone who has worked a menial warehouse package job though, i would recommend you run far away from that! i worked at a really nice company and it sucked so i cant imagine working at a high stress amazon warehouse. the job was so menial and absolutely started to drive me crazy doing the same motions all day. i think flex is much nicer because you get to be in your own environment, take a breath, and go out driving and seeing new places - actually DOING something. but of course, if you try it out, i will gladly listen to your experience :)

It's nice to see you happy. It's refreshing to see another side of amazon, as like i said last video comment my uncle works for amazon and he gets bonuses for picking up volunteer shifts and he's had all praise for where he works. Even can wear PJ's to work, it's that inviting. He works in a sorting center, so not the actual warehouse but what you're saying, is also what he's saying and seems like people around my state (WA State) are liking the flex jobs. Ty for the breakdown, it was really interesting to learn and to see. I personally love driving and have considered jobs like this before. I'm getting really tired of retail jobs. So idk, maybe if i had a fuel efficient car, i'd consider doing this in the future. It almost feels like for you, you're in control of what you wanna do, which is an easier life to work balance that most people strive for. So glad that this has made you happy thus far. Well how come you didn't just switch jobs then? Haha I think our warehouse workers make $17/hr, so yes I guess the drivers do have potential to make more.... but many people only see that surface hourly rate. They don't take account for cost of gas and don't understand that a little bit of your soul dies every time you put on 100-200miles on your personal car when ever you do a single job. Overall, it's a bad job. You risk your like out there on the road for 5+ hours driving high speeds, and your car will be extremely depreciated afterwards. At least warehouse workers pay and expenses is steady. Flex drivers, the smart ones, know not to pick up standard/low paying blocks (most of them are), and it's not often we will see a block that is worth it to take on, thus our income is not steady.

i'm a dd for amazon and the vans have set neighborhoods they deliver to. you're usually stuck with 270 to 400 packages depending on the season. The worst thing is apartments.

I always find it interesting that my amazon driver is a new person each delivery, but my FedEx, UPS and USPS guys are the same every day, aside from a second UPS van that occasionally swaps out. I finally learned the general layouts of apartments so I can do them much quicker than before, but I always sigh when I see a unit number on the next delivery

Nothing has made me consider a side hustle (other than my annual haunted house gig) quite like these videos. Though I still probably shouldn't, considering I still drive the same '08 hatchback I learned to drive in. Maybe this could be how I finance my next car once this one finally dies.

What about insurance ? I live in NV and I believe you have to tell your insurance provider that you’re using your car for work purposes such as Uber/ food delivery/ etc

Not gonna lie, Uber and Lift sounds like a nightmare if working by yourself is what you enjoy. Since my brother owns a taxi agency (which works with Bolt - regional alternative to Uber), I know that there is a reason why it has a high turnover rate. Many of his drivers told me some pretty terrible stories of customers destroying their cars, doing drugs, getting aggressive with the driver, molestation etc. Wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole. Though it might give you some pretty interesting life experience.

Probably, but the fact that I'm scared about it makes me more intrigued. The main reason I haven't yet is because of damage to the vehicle itself though. Even just a grease or oil smudge will ruin my seats

Came here for reptiles a while back and sort of saw your channel downturn in recent months, I wasnt too sure how you channel would go on and if youd even have the passion and interest to keep it going. If im honest id have probably said that youll just slowly disappear. BUT this video was one of your best ever imo! Im into finances so that might factor in but the way you methodicaly listed every factor that goes into the whole thing even taxes etc was an amazing insight and should be something that even amazon could use as feedback. I am in no way interested in becoming a amazon driver, not even sure we got the same system in austria but that video was captivating and informative to the very last minute, you clearly have a talent for business and making awesome content so keep it up, I could watch this for hours!:)

Do you get to preview the route before accepting it or is it always a complete surprise? Like can you see the stops on your map or only after you accept the route?

The route isn't applied to you until you check in so it's always a surprise, aside from how long it's estimated to take

I’m a dog trainer, carry citronella spray dog corrector with you. It’ll save your ass one day literally. Only use it in dire situations though because people aren’t a massive fan of citronella dogs.

I haven't heard of citronella but I do carry OC spray as a less lethal. I wouldn't be surprised if a dog forces me to use it sooner or later.

Alex- did you car insurance need notified about driving for Amazon? I’m concerned that you might have issues if you did not discuss this and are in an accident. Using personal vehicle for work is something I have seen become an issue but I’m not knowledgeable enough to educate you. Just wanted you to know you might want to look into it sooner than later. Hopefully it’s ok.

Have you considered cost of depreciating your Tesla and adding miles to it? You're making about $1 per mile (not sure if your income figure was gross or net). Meaning by the time you put 100,000 miles on your car, you'll have only made $100,000. That trade alone barely seems worth it to me not even considering gas/time etc.
@GoHerping

My accountant depreciates my assets, but that's def a good point and something people should consider. In my case, I've already put on so many miles, both personal and business that it's kinda whatever to me. I also get attached to cars and most likely won't sell this one. If/when I try starting a new biz and upgrade my personal car, I would like to designate this one as a company vehicle

im considering doing this. that's a load of money, but i have a small toyota yaris. also i did drive for lyft a few years ago and i made bank. with lyft, you do have to get a pattern down and read your city's rush hours. I did like 4 am trips because that's when most people go to the airport, which are expensive rides. it all depends on how you set your own schedule. and you're right, the tax write off for miles is so good. same with anything you buy on the road, like food, coffee, even buying a new cellphone/car can be used as a write off so long as you use that for the contract work. it's fascinating stuff

I see some pretty small cars but I don't think I've seen any yarises (yarii?) - I do think I have an advantage since I'm already so used to crunching my taxable income to the tiniest bit imaginable lol

@@GoHerping that's good to know. Also, I always had this idea to make content while being a lyft driver, talking to people and sharing all the crazy experiences that comes with it. I think it'd be exciting if you tried it, since you already got humor down so well. You'll get so many stories interacting with passengers, it can be hilarious at times. Like back in the day, I joined a facebook lyft group and someone had a decked out hello kitty car which got to be well known in the community. idk if lyft is that worth it now because of the saturation, at the same time, i think gas prices have also turned away many drivers so maaaybe there's money to be made out there. but anyway im rambling now. I look forward to all your other endeavors.

Do you get an app that calculates the best order and routes for all the shift's deliveries? Or you have to do that by yourself?
@GoHerping
Жыл бұрын
Yeah the app gives you an ideal route to follow, I occasionally change it manually so I finish closest to my house. But the packages aren't sorted and oganizing them is what takes the longest, aside from actual driving
