Another thing to consider is that some books are used over multiple years, so you can divide the cost for that book by the number of years you’ll be using it.

Getting Kindle versions of these books is significantly cheaper. So many of the books I got were only $1 and some were free. Also you can utilize the library! The curriculum really is super accessible for so many families.

I know Kindle is cheaper but it just doesn’t feel the same to me! I’ve tried a few times to get into using a Kindle but it hasn’t stuck yet. But this is great advice! It’s also a great way to not fill your entire house with huge books 😂

This video is so helpful! Thank you! Do you have any videos that walk you through how to actually use the website? Its kinda overwhelming, and I'm a visual learner!

I’m glad this was helpful! I don’t like to step on the toes of the wonderful creators of AO, so I’ll link to a video they did that walks you through how to navigate the curriculum on their recently updated website. ☺️ kzitem.info/news/bejne/mWai2q6GgGpoe4I

Hi Dana! I’m sorry, I don’t quite understand your question. Are you curious how to get all of the readings done for multiple ages?

I don’t know why AO has staunchly stood on their insistence on calling themselves a “free” curriculum. When the reality is that SAMPLES of suggested schedules are free. Suggestions of extensive lists of books to buy are free. For people like me who have no internet access available to a computer at home, and who access AO on our phones, buying used books via thrift books and Amazon is the way to go. And the reality is that even if we choose to use 1/2 of the suggested books, we will still spend a small fortune on our books. I’m squirreling away next years’ books now, little by little. Not complaining, it’s worth it to build up a worthwhile home library. But I will say that calling it a “free curriculum” is just silly. It’s a free GUIDE to a very expensive curriculum. Apx. $200 for one student’s literature, history and science books is very high for homeschooling. I’ve been homeschooling for over 20 years and know a thing or two about curricula.

I also buy the physical books, so the “free options” aren’t always available to me either. And while AO is not actually free, since we need to buy the books, I do consider the curriculum free. Other companies like Beautiful Feet or Simply Charlotte Mason charge for the reading schedules and lessons that go with the lessons. Since AO provides the booklist and schedule on their website to anyone who is interested, I find that a huge blessing!

They put in years of hard work to create AO, and we get to utilize all they have created for free! What a blessing! I get to choose how much I spend on materials. And that part IS expensive, because I buy as many books as possible.
